Cardinals Complete Weekend Sweep of Suffolk with 8–3 Victory

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team closed out their weekend series against Suffolk University with a dominant performance on Saturday afternoon at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena, earning an 8–3 victory over the Rams.

Plattsburgh State got on the board early in the first period, responding swiftly after Suffolk's opening goal by Katie Newkirk just over five minutes into the contest. First-year Riley Keller (Cuba, N.Y.) knotted the score just 49 seconds later with an assist from senior Ella Fesette, junior Sydnee Francis (Canton, N.Y.) followed with a tally set up by senior Emily Kasprzak (Niagara, N.Y.) and first-year Bailey MacKellar (Hamburg, N.Y.) to give the Cardinals their first lead of the game. Senior Molly Riggi (Farmingdale, N.J.) continued the offensive surge with a goal, assisted by MacKellar and Kasprzak, before Kasprzak struck on the power play with helpers from sophomores Seoyoung Yoo (Yongin, Republic of Korea) and Kayson Ruegge (Edmond, Okla.). Senior Taya Balfour (Moorestown, N.J.) rounded out the first-period scoring, sending the Cardinals into the break with a commanding 5–1 advantage.

The Cardinals added two more goals in the second period as Kasprzak notched her second goal of the game with an assist from first-year Piper Smith (Newnan, Ga.) at, and Kate Conlon (New Hudson, Mich.) extended the lead off an assist from sophomore Tessa Morris. Suffolk tacked on two goals in the middle stanza from Bella Schmidt and Ava Buckley but wouldn't have an answer for Plattsburgh's offensive attack. Smith sealed the scoring in the third, knocking home a goal with an assist from Keller at 2:22 to cap the Cardinal offense.

With the sweep of Suffolk completed, Plattsburgh improves to 9–5 on the season and will be back in action Friday at 3 p.m. at home as they aim to continue their perfect record in conference play when they host SUNY Canton.
