Smith’s Late Goal Lifts Cardinals Past Canton, 1–0

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team remained at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena on Friday afternoon, hosting SUNY Canton in the Cardinals' return to SUNYAC play. Looking to extend their win streak to five games and maintain their all-time dominance over the Kangaroos, Plattsburgh delivered a gritty performance in a defensive battle, earning a 1-0 victory.

The lone tally of the contest came in the third period, as first-year Piper Smith (Newnan, Ga.) found the back of the net with under five minutes remaining off an assist from sophomore Kayson Ruegge (Edmond, Okla.), giving the Cardinals the decisive edge.

Plattsburgh's defense controlled the game from the drop of the puck, limiting Canton to just 17 shots on goal while generating 40 shots of their own. Sophomore goaltender Maddy Stetson (Wasilla, Alaska) was sharp between the pipes, stopping all 17 shots she faced to record the shutout in 60 minutes of work. The Cardinals also managed strong possession at the dot, winning 39 faceoffs compared to Canton's 14, helping fuel consistent pressure in the offensive zone.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 10-5 overall and 5-0 in SUNYAC play. Friday's victory marks another chapter in Plattsburgh's undefeated history against Canton, as the Cardinals remain unbeaten all-time in the 17 meetings between the two programs. Plattsburgh will stay at home and return to conference action tomorrow at 3 p.m., hosting Oswego in another SUNYAC matchup.
