Plattsburgh, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team returned to the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena Friday afternoon for the first time since Dec. 6 and picked up a dominant 6-1 victory over Suffolk University in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Plattsburgh wasted little time setting the tone, striking early in the first period when first-year Zoe Puc (West Palm Beach, Fla.) opened the scoring at 7:12. The Cardinals extended their lead later in the opening frame with a power-play goal from sophomore Seoyoung Yoo (Yongin, Republic of Korea), giving Plattsburgh a 2-1 advantage after 20 minutes.
The Cardinals poured it on in the second and third periods. Sophomore Kayson Ruegge (Edmond, Okla.) added an unassisted shorthanded tally in the second to push the lead to 3-1, and then struck again early in the third on an assist by sophomore Kate Conlon (New Hudson, Mich.) to make it 4-1. Plattsburgh continued to build momentum with goals from sophomore Brooke Terry (Massena, N.Y.) and senior Emily Kasprzak (Niagara, N.Y.) late in the third period to seal the convincing victory.
In net, junior Chloe Lewis (Monson, Mass.) turned in a strong performance, making 14 saves to backstop the Cardinal effort. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 8-5 on the season and look to keep the momentum going. Plattsburgh will host a rematch with the same Suffolk squad tomorrow at 3 p.m. in search of back-to-back victories.
