Women’s Basketball Suffers Narrow 76-70 Road Loss to Oswego State

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team put together a strong second half, but fell 76-70 in a narrow State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) road loss to the Oswego State Lakers. Junior guard Julia Greek (Long Island, N.Y. / Ward Melville) went off for a career-high 28 points to pair with a game-high seven assists, two rebounds, and a steal in the overall effort.

Both Rosie Sculco (Amsterdam, N.Y. / Amsterdam) and Jaden Wilson (Johnstown, N.Y. / Johnstown) chipped in 10 points. Senior forward Imani Walcott (Albany, N.Y. / Albany) anchored the defense with a game-high seven blocks and pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds.

For the Lakers, Giavanna White-Principio led the charge with 28 points to go with a game-high 22 rebounds. Zhane Holmes reached double figures as well with 16 points to go with seven rebounds.

Overall, for the game, Plattsburgh State shot a solid 32.0% from the floor but had the edge from behind the arc, shooting 39.4%, knocking down 13 three-pointers. Oswego State shot a solid 32.9% from the field, but struggled from the three-point line, shooting 15.0%. The Lakers dominated the rebounding game (66-43) and finished with 18 second-chance points to the Cardinals' two. On the other hand, Plattsburgh took advantage of turnovers, recording nine points off turnovers, while Oswego had five.

Greek netted a three-pointer to get the scoring started in the opening quarter, and Walcott tacked on a layup at the 6:30 mark to give the Cardinals a 7-4 lead. After the Lakers tied the score at 7, a Sculco three-pointer put Plattsburgh back in front as the Cardinals led 14-10 after one.

The second quarter belonged to the Lakers, as a 9-0 run put Oswego ahead 19-14 before Greek ended the run with a jumper at the 6:55 mark, making the score 19-16. A three-point play from Desiree DuBois (Champlain, N.Y. / Northeastern Clinton Central) made the score 25-22 before Oswego went on a big run to take a 36-22 advantage and entered halftime leading 40-27.

Plattsburgh came out strong in the third quarter, outscoring the Lakers 20-12, sparked by an 11-0 run, and cut the deficit to 46-44 with 1:40 remaining in the third quarter. Greek followed that surge with a three-pointer to end the quarter as the Lakers led 52-47 headed into the fourth and final quarter.

Despite the Cardinals' hot third quarter, the Lakers built their lead back up to 61-49 with 8:01 left in the fourth quarter. Trailing by double figures, a Greek three-pointer at the 1:46 mark sparked a Cardinals comeback down the stretch, but Plattsburgh only came within four points and ultimately fell 76-70.

With the loss, Plattsburgh State falls to 7-4 (2-2 SUNYAC) and returns to Memorial Hall on Tuesday, Jan. 13, to face Potsdam at 5:30 p.m.
