PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Fueled by a balanced offensive, the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team picked up a 54-41 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win over Potsdam on Tuesday night in Memorial Hall.
Sophomore guard
Kayla Johannesen (Hyde Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Lourdes) led the offense with 10 points, and right behind her was senior forward
Kathy Peterson-Ross (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest) with nine points and seven rebounds.
Desiree DuBois (Champlain, N.Y. / Northeastern Clinton Central) and
Kaelyn Morgan (Chateaugay, N.Y. / Chateaugay Central) both contributed seven points and four rebounds each, while
Julia Greek (Long Island, N.Y. / Ward Melville) led all players with a career-high 12 rebounds to go with four points.
For the Bears, Lucie Scarpine paced the team with a game-high 16 points to pair with three rebounds. Olivia Cook chipped in eight points and five rebounds in the overall effort.
Overall, for the game, Plattsburgh State shot a solid 31.3% from the floor and 23.1% from behind the arc compared to Potsdam's 27.4% from the field and 12.5% from the three-point line. The Cardinals had a 52-44 advantage in rebounds and collected eight second-chance points while Potsdam bested them with 11. Both teams finished with 13 points off turnovers.
The opening quarter saw both teams trading baskets early, but a three-pointer from
Lauren LaFountain (Saratoga Springs, N.Y. / Saratoga Springs) at the 4:01 mark sparked the Cardinals and put Plattsburgh up 9-6. A quick five-point surge stretched the lead to 14-8 before Potsdam answered with a late three, sending Plattsburgh into the second quarter holding a 14-11 advantage.
Early in the second quarter, four straight points added to the Cardinals' lead, making the score 20-13 with 7:00 remaining. Potsdam countered with four points of their own, but an 8-0 run to end the second gave Plattsburgh a 28-17 lead at halftime.
Right out of the break, the Cardinals got on the board early as Johannesen nailed a three-pointer, extending Plattsburgh's lead to 31-14 at the 9:44 mark. Both teams went scoreless until Potsdam broke through at the 5:55 mark, but the Bears couldn't gain momentum as the Cardinals pushed their lead to 44-25 heading into the fourth quarter.
Two free throws from
Jaden Wilson (Johnstown, N.Y. / Johnstown) and a layup from
Rosie Sculco (Amsterdam, N.Y. / Amsterdam) to open the fourth quarter gave Plattsburgh its largest lead of the game at 48-25. Despite a late 6-0 run by Potsdam, the Cardinals stayed in control and closed out a 54-41 victory.
With the win, Plattsburgh State rises to 8-4 (3-2 SUNYAC) and next hosts Morrisville on Friday, Jan. 16, for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
