PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team remained unbeaten on the season, powering past St. Lawrence University, 5-2, on Saturday at the Field House Complex. The win marked the Cardinals' first victory over the Saints since 2017.
Plattsburgh jumped on the board early, as junior Xavier Kamba (Nyack, N.Y./Nyack) finished a pass from first-year Robbie Kapovic (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) in the 11th minute to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. St. Lawrence answered in the 20th minute when Grant Gilmer converted to level the score, but the Cardinals wasted little time responding. Just two minutes later, junior Tristan Laundree (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley) buried a shot off Kapovic's second assist of the contest to restore the lead at 2-1, which held through halftime.
The Cardinals carried their momentum into the second half. Senior Santiago Vargas (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) extended the advantage in the 50th minute, scoring directly off a corner kick, then doubled his tally less than 15 minutes later by putting away a rebound from a penalty kick. First-year Nicholas Espitia (Bay Shore, N.Y.) capped the scoring in the 72nd minute, heading home a corner for his first collegiate goal to put the match out of reach.
With the win, Plattsburgh improves to 3-0-1 on the season and will travel to Skidmore College for a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m.
