POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at Clarkson, falling to host Clarkson 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-19) before dropping a 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-17) decision to St. John Fisher on Friday night.
Plattsburgh State moves to 1-4 overall with the pair of losses and is back in action tomorrow, Sept. 6, as they conclude the weekend with a match against Keuka at 1 p.m. Host Clarkson moves to 2-2 overall and matchup against St. John Fisher later tonight at 7 p.m. St. John Fisher moves to 3-1 overall with the win and closes out the night against Clarkson at 7 p.m.
Clarkson 3, Plattsburgh State 0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-19)
After Plattsburgh dropped the first two sets to host Clarkson, the Golden Knights had all the momentum. The Cardinals responded with a strong offensive showing in the third set, but ultimately fell as the Golden Knights were able to pick up the set win for a 3-0 match victory.
Junior
Darby Collyear (Rockwall, Texas / Rockwall) led all players in kills with 12 and added three block assists for a 13.5 point performance to lead the Cardinals' efforts. First-year
Emily O'Brien (Monroe, N.Y. / Monroe-Woodbury) led the Cardinal attack with 12 assists. Defensively, junior
Iris Mulvey (Middle Island, N.Y. / Longwood) recorded a team-high 14 digs while senior
Katie Salphine (Le Roy, N.Y. / Le Roy) also had three block assists.
For the Golden Knights, Marin Hangliter led their attack with 10 kills, and Olivia Baxter led the defense with a game-high 17 digs. Ashley Currier set up the offense with 25 assists, and Jordyn Leader had three block assists.
The Golden Knights had the edge in digs (41-39), aces (10-4), and blocks (6-5).
After the Golden Knights took the lead early in the set, back-to-back points from the Cardinals, capped off by a service ace from
Maggie Lyon (Ballston Spa, N.Y. / Ballston Spa) made the score 11-7. The Cardinals tried to battle back, scoring three straight points to bring the score to 15-10, but the Golden Knights extended their lead to 21-14, eventually taking the opening set 25-16.
The Cardinals started the second set with a 4-0 rally that featured two service aces from O'Brien, but the Golden Knights matched it and tied the score at 4 before taking a 7-5 lead. The Cardinals drew even again, tying the score at 8, but a 5-0 run put the Golden Knights ahead for good as they went on to win 25-13.
The third set was even to start as both teams matched each other's runs, and it was tied at 10. The Golden Knights took a 12-10 lead before a 3-0 burst that saw two kills from Collyear put the Cardinals ahead 13-12. Later in the set, the Golden Knights used a 6-0 run to jump ahead 19-15, to which the Cardinals countered with back-to-back kills from Collyear and Lyon. Despite cutting the lead to three, the Golden Knights' offense outscored the Cardinals 6-2 for a 25-19 set win and secured a 3-0 match victory.
St. John Fisher 3, Plattsburgh State 0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-17)
Plattsburgh looked to bounce back in their second game of the day, but after dropping the first set and competitive second and third sets, the Cardinals fell in a 3-0 decision to St. John Fisher.
Collyear led the Cardinal attack once again with six kills as Mulvey contributed four to the overall offense, while O'Brien finished with 12 assists. Ryan had another double-digit performance in digs, defending a game-high 17.
For St. John Fisher, it was Kaylene Noble and Kalyna Dannenberg who paced their offense with 10 kills each. Zofia Keogh recorded 17 assists, and Kiera Hartpence collected 11 digs.
St. John Fisher had the edge in digs (44-39), aces (8-4), and blocks (4-3).
After back and forth play saw St. John Fisher with a 7-4 lead, a 5-0 run powered them to a strong 12-5 lead. The Cardinals' offense couldn't match St. John Fisher's attack after another run put them ahead 18-9. Back-to-back points for Plattsburgh cut into St. John Fisher's lead, but they ended the set on a 5-1 run and won 25-14.
The second set was a much closer affair as the Cardinals kept it close after three straight points, featuring an ace from Lyon, made the score 15-13 St. John Fisher. As the set went on, kills from Collyear and Salphine cut St. John Fisher's lead to 18-16. However, multiple runs put the game out of reach for the Cardinals as St. John Fisher led 24-17 before trading points to end the set with a 25-18 win.
St. John Fisher jumped out to a commanding lead to start the third set, but Plattsburgh battled back and cut the lead to 12-8. Before Plattsburgh's offense could get any momentum, St. John Fisher used multiple 3-0 runs and took an 18-9 lead. The Cardinals couldn't cut into the St. John Fisher lead as they ultimately fell 25-17 in the third and final set.
