POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team concludes its trip to Clarkson with a come-from-behind 3-2 (26-28, 25-17, 16-25, 25-14, 16-14) win over Keuka College on Saturday evening.
Juniors
Liya Girma (Sachse, Texas / Bishop Lynch) and
Iris Mulvey (Middle Island, N.Y. / Longwood) keyed the Cardinal attack with 16 and 13 kills, respectively. First-year
Emily O'Brien (Monroe, N.Y. / Monroe-Woodbury) set up the Cardinal offense with 22 assists, and junior
KC Burke (Murieta, Calif. / Northfield Mount Hermon (Mass.)) led the way defensively with a career and game-high 30 digs. Junior
Darby Collyear (Rockwall, Texas / Rockwall) and senior
Katie Salphine (Le Roy, N.Y. / Le Roy) totaled five blocks each, which led all players.
For the Wolves, Nina Scott led the offense with 15 kills, Gabby Rodriguez led the defense with 19 digs, and Summer Elza set up the offense with 18 assists.
The Cardinals had the advantage in digs (75-63) and blocks (9-5), while the Wolves had a slight edge in aces (9-8).
Plattsburgh State rises to 2-4 overall with the win and is back in action next Saturday, Sept. 13, at Vermont State University (VTSU) Castleton for a tri-match, opening up play against VTSU-Castleton at 11 a.m. Keuka falls to 1-6 with the loss and next travels to the University of Rochester on Friday, Sept. 12, for a matchup against Wheaton (Mass.) at 4 p.m.
The Cardinals controlled the opening set for most of the play until Keuka tied the game at 15, and both teams continued to battle back and forth for the lead. The Cardinals created some distance after back-to-back kills from
Kyleigh Ganz (Phoenix, Ariz. / Seton Catholic Prep) and Mulvey made the score 22-19, but the Wolves tied it at 24 and went on to win 28-26.
The Cardinals took a decisive 25-17 set win in the second set after a 7-0 outburst featuring two kills from Girma put them ahead 21-14. Plattsburgh then scored four of the next seven points as Mulvey put down the winning kill as the Cardinals took the second set 25-17.
Keuka opened the third set with a 3-1 lead and continued to control play after a 4-0 run put the Wolves on top 16-9. Plattsburgh's offense gained momentum late after a kill from Mulvey made the score 19-16 Wolves, but a 6-0 run to end the set gave the Wolves a 25-16 win.
Trailing 2-1, the Cardinals bounced back in the fourth set to force a fifth and final set. The Cardinals opened up a 10-6 lead thanks to a 4-0 burst powered by two kills from Girma. Another run featuring two service aces from
Melina Morillo (Bronx, N.Y. / Bronx Latin) extended Plattsburgh's lead to a commanding 16-9 advantage. The Cardinals' offense continued to dominate as a 3-0 run to end the set gave Plattsburgh the 25-14 set win.
The deciding set saw the momentum shift both ways as Plattsburgh held a 7-2 advantage before Keuka responded and took a 9-8 lead. The lead went back and forth until the two teams were tied at 13. Despite a Keuka kill that put the Wolves up 14-13, the Cardinals countered with a kill from Collyear that led to three straight points and a 16-14 set win for a 3-2 match victory.
