Women's Tennis Rolls to 7-0 Sweep Over Russell Sage

TROY, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team dominated on Friday afternoon, sweeping Russell Sage College, 7-0. The Cardinals didn't drop a single set, winning all three doubles matches and taking each singles match in straight sets.

Plattsburgh State improves to 2-1 on the young season and returns home to open State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play against New Paltz on Saturday, Sept. 13. The Gators fall to 0-1 and are back in action tomorrow against Brockport.

The Cardinals set the tone early, as Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) and Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) cruised to a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Shortly after, Carmen Marino (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) and Ava Perry (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) earned a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. Even with the doubles point already secured, Kristy Cantwell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and Abigail Macdougal (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley) capped doubles play with a 6-0 win at No. 3.

Carrying the momentum into singles, Carey and Marino quickly posted back-to-back 6-0, 6-0 victories to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead. Perry then clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at No. 3 singles. Mitchell extended the lead with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, followed by Cantwell, who matched the score with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4. Rounding out the sweep, Marena Tuba (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) secured a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.
