PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team continued its strong start in conference play on Saturday, earning a 2-0 victory over Morrisville in a contest the Cardinals controlled from start to finish.
Having defeated the Mustangs in each of their previous three meetings, including a 5-0 win last fall, the Cardinals entered play looking to remain perfect in SUNYAC action after a 5-0 triumph over Fredonia last weekend.
Plattsburgh State dominated the opening half, outshooting Morrisville by a staggering 22-0 margin. Despite the pressure, the Mustangs held firm defensively, keeping numbers behind the ball and heading into halftime locked in a scoreless draw.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, the Cardinals finally broke through as their leading scorer junior Sydney Myers (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Saranac) netted her sixth goal of the year to make it 1-0. With just under 10 minutes to play, Plattsburgh State added insurance when senior Kelly Licata (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) collected a flicked-on pass from Myers and buried her second goal of the season to seal the win.
The Cardinals finished with an impressive 34 shots and recorded their third shutout of the year, with goalkeepers Desiree Dubois (Champlain, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton Central), Lily Bailey (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) and Brook Lynn DaSilva (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) combining for the clean sheet.
With the win, Plattsburgh State improves to 5-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Cardinals will have the midweek off before returning to SUNYAC action on the road at Cortland on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m.
