CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team saw its unbeaten conference streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 on the road to Cortland in SUNYAC action.
The Cardinals entered the match 2-0 in conference play following wins over Fredonia and Morrisville, but faced a Red Dragons squad they had tied twice in the last three years and most recently fell to last season.
Cortland opened the scoring early after being awarded a questionable penalty in the 12th minute, which Katie Diem converted to give the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead. Cortland would begin to control more of the playing following the opening score much, outshooting Plattsburgh 8-4, and carried their advantage into halftime.
Needing an equalizer, Plattsburgh came out strong in the second half, applying consistent pressure and generating several quality chances. Despite being outshot 9-6 in the period, the Cardinals dictated long stretches of possession and put the Cortland defense on its heels. However, the Red Dragons held firm to preserve the shutout and secure the 1-0 victory.
With the loss, Plattsburgh State falls to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in SUNYAC play. The Cardinals return home on Wednesday, Oct. 8, for another conference matchup against Oneonta.
