PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team saw its two-game win streak come to an end on Wednesday evening, as the Cardinals fell in a hard-fought 2-1 battle against St. Lawrence University in non-conference action at the Field House Complex.
After dropping a 2-1 decision to the Saints last season, the Cardinals came into the matchup hungry for redemption. The opening half was a defensive stalemate, with both teams limiting chances. First-year defender Ireland McGowan (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) anchored the back line with her strongest collegiate performance to date, helping hold the Saints to just one shot on goal. The halftime whistle sounded with the score still deadlocked at 0-0.
St. Lawrence broke through less than a minute into the second half, capitalizing on a corner kick scramble before Lilly Stone slotted home the game's opening goal. Plattsburgh responded with increased pressure, and their persistence paid off in the 62nd minute. Junior Sydney Myers (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Saranac) fired a shot that was saved but spilled into the path of first-year Alana DeLaCruz (Albany, N.Y./Shaker), who buried the rebound for her third goal in the past two contests to level the score at 1-1.
The Saints would have the final say, however, as Madison King-Thurber netted the game-winner in the closing minutes to seal the 2-1 result.
With the loss, Plattsburgh falls to 4-5 overall. The Cardinals now shift their focus back to SUNYAC play, hosting Morrisville on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Field House Complex.
