PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team opened conference play in dominant fashion on Saturday, rolling past Fredonia, 5-0, at home. The Cardinals have now defeated the Blue Devils in each of the last six meetings and have not lost to them since 2014.
First-year forward Alana DeLaCruz (Albany, N.Y./Shaker) provided the early spark, scoring twice in the first half. She opened the scoring in the 17th minute, heading home a cross from junior Sydney Myers (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Saranac), before doubling the lead 10 minutes later off a pass from sophomore Bailee Lafountain (Mooers Forks, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton). Backed by strong play in the midfield from Myers, senior Kelly Licata (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North), and senior Jillian Bezio (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley), Plattsburgh controlled possession and outshot Fredonia, 13-3, in the first half to take a 2-0 advantage into the break.
The Cardinals wasted little time adding to their lead in the second half. In the 58th minute, sophomore Leah Warren (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon) tallied her first goal of the season on a cross from DeLaCruz. Less than two minutes later, LaFountain, making her second straight start, scored in her second consecutive game to stretch the advantage to 4-0.
Plattsburgh capped the scoring in the closing minutes when senior Sally Gliganic (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) netted her first collegiate goal, sealing the 5-0 victory. Sophomore goalkeeper Desiree Dubois (Champlain, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton Central) anchored the defense with a shutout, making her second straight start without allowing a goal.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in SUNYAC play. They return to non-conference action on Wednesday, Sept. 24, hosting St. Lawrence at 7 p.m.
