Box Score CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team dominated on Friday afternoon, sweeping Fredonia, 7-0. The Cardinals didn't drop a single set, winning all three doubles matches and taking each singles match in straight sets.
With the victory, Plattsburgh State improves to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. The Cardinals return to action tomorrow at 11 a.m. for more conference play against Cortland. Fredonia falls to 0-6 and will face New Paltz tomorrow.
The Cardinals set the tone early as Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) and Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) cruised to a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Shortly after, Kristy Cantwell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and Abigail MacDougal (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley) rolled to a 6-0 victory at No. 3 doubles. Even with the doubles point already secured, Carmen Marino (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) and Ava Perry (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) capped doubles play with a 6-3 win at No. 2.
Carrying that momentum into singles, Carey and Cantwell quickly posted back-to-back victories to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead. Marino then clinched the match with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Marena Tuba (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) extended the lead with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles, followed by Mitchell, who pulled out a three-set thriller with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 victory at No. 1. Rounding out the sweep, Perry secured a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles.
