VESTAL, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team saw its season come to a close in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament semifinals, falling to top-seeded Oswego after qualifying for the tournament as the No. 4 seed.
The Cardinals entered the semifinal matchup looking to avenge a 4-3 regular-season loss to the Lakers earlier this season.
Plattsburgh opened the match with a victory at No. 1 doubles, as senior Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) and senior Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) earned a 6-4 win over Leah Bell and Emily DeLuca. However, Oswego captured the remaining doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Isabella Eason and Kate Hayes earned a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles, while Avery Borman and Aubrey Salati secured a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles over first-year Paige Westfall (Brewerton, N.Y.) and sophomore Abigail Macdougal (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley).
In singles play, the Lakers picked up victories at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 singles. Emily DeLuca defeated sophomore Ava Perry (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, while Eason earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory over sophomore Carmen Marino (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) at No. 4 singles. Salati added a 6-4, 6-3 win over Macdougal at No. 6 singles.
The Cardinals continued to compete in the remaining singles matches. Mitchell took the opening set 6-4 against Borman at No. 1 singles before dropping the second set 6-2, with the match unfinished in the third set. At No. 2 singles, Carey dropped the opening set 6-2 before battling back to take the second set 6-4 against Bell, with the match also left unfinished.
At No. 5 singles, graduate student Marena Tubo (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) pushed Hayes to a tiebreak in the opening set before the match concluded unfinished in the second set.
With the loss, Plattsburgh State finishes the season with a 9-6 overall record and a 2-3 mark in conference play. The Cardinals conclude their campaign in the SUNYAC semifinals once again and will now shift their focus toward next season.
