Kamba’s Late Strike Lifts Cardinals Past Union, 1-0

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team remained unbeaten on the season Saturday afternoon, edging Union College, 1-0, in non-conference play at the Field House Complex.

The Cardinals entered the match with a 3-0-2 record, coming off a 2-2 draw against Skidmore earlier in the week, and were looking to even the all-time series with Union at eight wins apiece. Plattsburgh dominated possession and created several quality scoring chances in the first half, outshooting the Garnet Chargers 10-2, but the Union defense held strong as the teams went into halftime scoreless.

The contest mirrored the Cardinals' earlier scoreless draw against Norwich, despite controlling the run of play. However, junior Xavier Kamba (Nyack, N.Y./Nyack) made sure history did not repeat itself. With just five minutes remaining, Kamba buried a strike from the top of the box off a pass from senior Santiago Vargas (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage), breaking the deadlock and giving Plattsburgh the lead.

Sophomore goalkeeper Matthew D'Ippolito (Baldwin Place, N.Y./Somers) earned his fourth clean sheet of the season, stopping all three shots he faced. The defensive unit, anchored by seniors Danny Perry (Shirley, N.Y./Longwood) and Tony Kochelev (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis), received a boost from senior Justin Siegel (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK), who made his first start of the year at center back. All three logged 90-minute efforts to help secure the shutout.

With the victory, Plattsburgh improves to 4-0-2 on the year and will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 17, when they host Clarkson University at 7 p.m.
