Women’s Soccer Falls Short in First Road Contest Against RPI

TROY, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team came up just short in its first road test of the season, dropping a 1-0 decision to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Sunday afternoon.

Coming off a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Castleton on Friday, the Cardinals looked to make it two straight to begin the season. The opening half was an even back-and-forth battle, with RPI controlling much of the possession. Despite that, Plattsburgh outshot the Engineers 8-4 in the first 45 minutes and generated its best looks in the final 10 minutes of the half.

Sophomore Bailee Lafountain (Mooers Forks, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton) sparked the attack off the bench, slotting a ball through to senior Claire Bottjer (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes), whose attempt missed just wide of the target. Moments later, junior transfer Sydney Myers (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Saranac) rose for a header that was cleared off the line. However, it was RPI who broke through first, with Maddy Kaminski finding the back of the net in the 41st minute to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The Cardinals pressed hard in the second half, creating several dangerous chances in front of goal. Despite outshooting RPI 11-6 over the course of the match, Plattsburgh was unable to find an equalizer as the Engineers held firm to secure the narrow victory.

Plattsburgh State falls to 1-1 and will look to bounce back on Wednesday, Sept. 3, as the squad travels to Clarkson University for a 4 p.m. non-conference matchup.
