PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team opened its season with a 6-1 victory over Vermont State University Castleton on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 1-0 and return to action at home against Farmingdale on Friday, Aug. 29, at 3 p.m. The Spartans drop to 0-1 and will face Russell Sage on Friday, Aug. 29, at 4 p.m.
Plattsburgh State got off to a strong start in doubles play. At No. 2 doubles, Carmen Marino (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) and Ava Perry (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) secured a 6-1 win. The No. 1 doubles pair of Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) and Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) battled to a 7-6 victory, while the No. 3 duo of Kristy Cantwell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and Marena Tubo (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) completed the sweep with a 6-3 win.
In singles competition, Mitchell picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1, while Marino followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5. Carey clinched the match for the Cardinals at No. 2 singles, posting a dominant 6-1, 6-1 performance. Cantwell added a three-set victory at No. 4 singles (6-0, 4-6, 6-3), and Tubo capped off the day with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.
