Women’s Lacrosse Hangs Tough in 18-12 Setback Against Oneonta

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team's late fourth quarter rally was not enough to overcome the Oneonta Red Dragons as the Cardinals fell 18-12 in State University of New York Athletic Conference action. Junior Cynthia Barnosky (Shirley, N.Y. / William Floyd) led the way for Plattsburgh with four goals and an assist for a five-point performance.

Sophomore Abby Guasconi (Ogdensburg, N.Y. / Ogdensburg Free Academy) had a solid outing as well with her first career hat-trick for a career-high three goals in a game to help lead the Cardinal offense. First-year Ashley O'Hara (Chittenango, N.Y. / The Hill School) contributed two goals while Rachel LaMar (Ballston Lake, N.Y. / Shenendehowa), Iohseriio Tabor (Akwesasne, N.Y. / Salmon River), and Nicole Resnick (Latham, N.Y. / Shaker) all tacked on one goal each. Caitlin Nash (Patchogue, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) and Maggie Maurer (Stony Point, N.Y. / North Rockland) both recorded an assist on the day while Nash led the charge defensively with a career-high seven draw controls in a game, five ground balls, and a caused turnover.

For the Red Dragons, Cassidy Moore led all players with nine points off a game-high five goals and a game-high four assists while picking up a game-high eight draw controls. Ellie Downey and Lindsey Townes both finished with four goals while Downey added two assists for six points. Margot Haring led her team in ground balls with five, and Ava De Vito led them in caused turnovers with three.

The Red Dragons won the shot battle by a slight margin of 34-31 and had 24 shots on goal while the Cardinals had 22. The Red Dragons won the battle on the circle with 17 draw controls to the Cardinals' 16, but the Cardinals had the advantage on the ground with 24 ground balls to the Red Dragons' 21. Both teams made three free-position shots, with Plattsburgh attempting eight and Oneonta six. On clears, the Cardinals were 13-15 and the Red Dragons were 13-18.

Plattsburgh State falls to 3-8 (1-4 SUNYAC) and next travels to Oswego State on Saturday, Apr. 12, with the draw control in the air at 11 a.m. Oneonta rises to 4-8 (3-2) and next hosts Canton on Saturday, Apr. 12 at 3 p.m.

It was Plattsburgh who struck first as Barnosky tallied her first goal of the game just over a minute into the action. However, Oneonta countered with three straight goals and took a 3-1 lead with less than 10 minutes to go in the first quarter. A strike from the free-position spot from Tabor brought Plattsburgh within one, but Oneonta quickly responded as Townes got one pass the Cardinals' goalie off the pass of Downey and cushioned the Red Dragons' lead to 4-2. Back-to-back goals from Plattsburgh tied the game at 4 before Oneonta ended the quarter with back-to-back goals as well and took a 6-4 lead into the second quarter.

Those back-to-back goals to end the first started an 8-0 run for the Red Dragons as Oneonta scored six straight goals to start the second quarter and extended their lead to 12-4. O'Hara ended the run with an unassisted tally at the 3:53 mark, and Guasconi added a player-up goal for Plattsburgh, followed by a near buzzer beater from Barnosky as she got the shot off with one second remaining in the second quarter off a pass from Maurer and made the score 13-7 at halftime.

A four-goal run to start the third quarter, including a player-down goal, pushed the Red Dragons' lead to double figures with less than five minutes remaining. The Cardinals countered with back-to-back goals to end the quarter and made the score 18-9 entering the final quarter.

After the Red Dragons scored the opening goal of the fourth quarter in less than a minute of play, the Cardinal defense held them scoreless the rest of the way. The Cardinals' offense rallied late, scoring three goals with less than five minutes remaining in the game, but ultimately fell 18-12.

Graduate student Mae Olshansky (Las Vegas, Nev. / New Trier) made six saves in the loss for Plattsburgh. Julia Hawkins earned the win in net for Oneonta in 30 minutes of action with two saves, while Margot Haring came in relief and made eight saves in 30 minutes of action.
