Women’s Lacrosse Drops a 19-7 Decision to Oswego State on the Road

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team dropped a 19-7 decision to Oswego State on the road at Laker Turf Stadium in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday afternoon. Junior Cynthia Barnosky (Shirley, N.Y. / William Floyd) led the Cardinals on offense with two goals as she has now tied the program record for goals in a career with 82.

Ashley O'Hara (Chittenango, N.Y. / The Hill School) also had a multi-point outing with a goal and an assist. Other scorers for Plattsburgh included Maggie Maurer (Stony Point, N.Y. / North Rockland), Erica Dickinson (Yaphank, N.Y. / Bellport), Lillian Gilroy (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy), and Chase Calandra (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy), who all recorded a goal. Junior Emma McLean (Burlington, Mass. / Pomfret School) tallied an assist for her first career point. Gilroy scooped up six draw controls, followed by Caitlin Nash (Patchogue, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) with three, and Alex LaDue (Saranac Lake, N.Y. / Saranac Lake) collected three ground balls.

For the Lakers, Mackenzie Winn led all players in points with eight off a game-high six assists and two goals. Julia Quirk led her team in goals with six, totaling six points, while Mackenzie Winn and Madison Davis both scored two goals. Davis led the team in caused turnovers with three, and Sophia Ruschin led them in draw controls with five.

The Lakers dominated the shot count 33-12 as well as had the advantage in ground balls 15-12. Oswego just edged out Plattsburgh on the circle with 15 draw controls to the Cardinals' 12. The Cardinals went 2-4 on free-position shots while the Lakers were perfect, going 3-3. Plattsburgh finished 6-10 on clears, and Oswego was 10-14.

Plattsburgh State falls to 3-9 (1-5 SUNYAC) and is back in action on Tuesday, Apr. 15, when they hosts New Paltz at 3 p.m. Oswego State rises to 10-2 (6-0 SUNYAC) and is back in action on Tuesday, Apr. 15, when they travel to Potsdam for a 4 p.m. start time.

It was the Cardinals who struck first in this game, just a minute into play, as O'Hara netted an unassisted goal to give Plattsburgh the early lead in the opening quarter. However, the Lakers closed the quarter with five straight goals led by Quirk with two and took a 5-1 lead into the second quarter.

The second quarter began with an opening goal from Plattsburgh as well, this time from Dickinson as she tacked on an unassisted tally and made the score 5-2 at the 13:04 mark. The Lakers responded minutes later and went on a four-goal scoring run, including a player-down goal, and cushioned their lead to 9-2 with over five minutes remaining in the quarter. After both teams exchanged goals, a late goal from Calandra with seven seconds to go in the quarter made the score 10-3 Lakers at halftime.

Barnosky scored the Cardinals' only goal of the quarter as back-to-back goals from the Lakers to open and end the quarter extended the Lakers' lead to 14-5 after three quarters of play.

After a player-up goal from the Lakers started the fourth quarter, Gilroy responded right away to cut the Lakers' lead to single digits with over 13 minutes remaining. After a tally from Quirk at the 11:18 mark, both teams went scoreless until Barnosky scored her second goal of the game off the assist from O'Hara at the 5:10 mark and made the score 16-7. However, the Lakers scored the next three goals as the Cardinals dropped a 19-7 decision on Saturday afternoon.  

Graduate student Mae Olshansky (Las Vegas, Nev. / New Trier) made eight saves in the loss for Plattsburgh while Alana Iacovissi made six saves in the win for Oswego.
