PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Junior
Cynthia Barnosky (Shirley, N.Y. / William Floyd) recorded the 83rd goal of her career, breaking the program record for career goals as the Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team fell to New Paltz 16-4 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Tuesday evening at the Field House Complex Turf.
The Cardinals also got goals from seniors
Maddy Garcia (New Paltz, N.Y. / New Paltz) and
Caitlin Nash (Patchogue, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) as well as first-year
Maggie Maurer (Stony Point, N.Y. / North Rockland).
Ashley O'Hara (Chittenango, N.Y. / The Hill School),
Rachel LaMar (Ballston Lake, N.Y. / Shenendehowa), and
Abby Guasconi (Ogdensburg, N.Y. / Ogdensburg Free Academy) all tallied assists for the Cardinals. Junior
Lillian Gilroy (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) scooped up a game-high 10 draw controls while junior
Lexi Carfi (Syracuse, N.Y. / Syracuse) led the way with three ground balls.
For the Hawks, Kaitlyn Shaw led all players in points with six, tying for a game-high four goals, while Kira Tucker also tied for a game-high four goals. Shaw also led the team in draw controls with four, while three players picked up three ground balls. Lexi Atwater recorded a three-goal hat-trick and Mia Baldinger had three assists, finishing with three points.
The Hawks dominated the shot count 42-11 and were 2-7 on free-position shots while the Cardinals were 1-5. Plattsburgh had the advantage on the circle, winning 15 draw controls to the Hawks' nine while New Paltz won the ground ball battle 19-13. The Cardinals finished 10-16 on clears, and the Hawks were 23-25.
Plattsburgh State moves to 3-10 (1-6 SUNYAC) and next travels to Canton on Friday, April 18, with the opening draw control in the air at 4 p.m. New Paltz moves to 11-3 (6-1 SUNYAC) and next travels to Oswego State on Friday, Apr. 18 at 4 p.m.
The Hawks scored the opening goal of the game as L. Atwater tallied an unassisted goal at the 12:29 mark before the Cardinals finally got on the board halfway through the quarter after LaMar found Maurer for the score, tying the game at one. New Paltz responded with back-to-back goals and took a 3-1 lead, but back-to-back goals from Plattsburgh got the Cardinals back in it and tied the game at three going into the second quarter.
After the Hawks scored back-to-back goals to start the second, Guasconi found Garcia for the one-timer at the 7:42 mark and made the score 5-4, bringing the Cardinals within one. That was the closest Plattsburgh came as the Hawks ended the second quarter on a three-goal run and went into halftime with an 8-4 lead.
The Cardinals were shut out in the second half as New Paltz added to their lead, tacking on eight more goals.
Mae Olshansky (Las Vegas, Nev. / New Trier) had an impressive third quarter in goal with three saves on 11 shots. The Cardinals couldn't muster any offense in the second half, recording two shots in the third and fourth quarters, ultimately falling 16-4.
Olshansky had a career-high 11 saves in 60 minutes of action, taking the loss in net for Plattsburgh. Piper Mascaros had three saves in 30 minutes of action, earning the win for New Paltz, while Gabriella Tommaso also saw 30 minutes of action, finishing with two saves.
