Women’s Lacrosse Suffers 15-6 Setback to Canton in Road SUNYAC Action

CANTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team suffered a 15-6 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) setback to the Canton Kangaroos on Friday evening at SUNY Canton Turf. Five different players scored goals for Plattsburgh, led by senior Rachel LaMar (Ballston Lake, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) with two goals, while first-year Ashley O'Hara (Chittenango, N.Y. / The Hill School) also had a multi-point game with two assists.

The rest of the Cardinal offense came from Leah Klotz (Highland, N.Y. / Highland), Erica Dickinson (Yaphank, N.Y. / Bellport), Cynthia Barnosky (Shirley, N.Y. / William Floyd), and Nicole Resnick (Latham, N.Y. / Shaker), who all scored one goal. Resnick also contributed on the defensive end with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior Lillian Gilroy (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) recorded a game-high six ground balls to go with three draw controls and a caused turnover, while sophomore Sloane Carr (Victor, N.Y. / Victor) had a team-high three caused turnovers and one ground ball.

For the Kangaroos, Ava Dupee led all scorers with seven points, with a game-high four assists and three goals. Maddy Caron led the team in goals with five, finishing with six points, while Lindsey Wunder and Olivia McCormick both had three points. Caron led all players in draw controls with a game-high seven and in caused turnovers with a game-high four.

Canton outshot Plattsburgh 34-21 and had 26 shots on goal compared to Plattsburgh's 16, while both teams went 1-4 on free-position shots. The Kangaroos won the ground game, collecting 28 ground balls to the Cardinals' 23, and had a 15-10 advantage on draw controls. Plattsburgh was efficient on clears, finishing 18-22, while Canton finished 21-28.

Plattsburgh State falls to 3-11 (1-7 SUNYAC) and has been eliminated from playoff contention with the loss. The Cardinals next travel to Potsdam on Wednesday, Apr. 23, for their season finale, with the opening draw control set for 4 p.m. Canton moves to 7-8 (3-5 SUNYAC) and next travels to Cortland on Wednesday, Apr. 23, for their regular season finale at 4 p.m.

The first quarter was all Canton to start as the Kangaroos scored four straight goals before Plattsburgh took advantage of a Canton yellow card. With the player-up advantage, the Cardinals were able to get on the board as Barnosky got the bounce shot pass the Canton goalie and made the score 4-1 Canton with less than five minutes remaining in the quarter. After back-to-back Canton goals extended their lead to five, the Cardinals tacked on a late goal with 23 seconds left in the quarter. O'Hara found a cutting LaMar wide open on the doorstep where she made a move on the goalie for the score, cutting the lead to 6-2 going into the second quarter.

Canton began the second quarter with another four-goal run led by Caron with two goals, pushing their lead to 10-2 halfway through the quarter. Plattsburgh ended the run with a player-up goal at the 6:13 mark by Dickinson that made the score 10-3 as O'Hara tallied her second assist of the game. That score held until halftime as both goalies stood tall in goal, making multiple saves to keep the other off the board.

While the Cardinal offense was held scoreless in the third quarter, the defense stood tall and held the Kangaroos to two goals, the lowest of any quarter, as Canton took a 12-3 lead after three quarters of play.

Plattsburgh put up three goals in the fourth, the most of any quarter, including a player-up and player-down goal, but Canton matched the Cardinals' three goals to secure a 15-6 victory. Resnick started the scoring with an unassisted player-up goal at the 12:09 mark, taking advantage of the Canton yellow card. Canton responded with three straight goals and made the score 15-4 at the 5:36 mark, pushing their lead to double digits. The Cardinals held Canton scoreless the rest of the way and countered with back-to-back goals from LaMar and Klotz at the 3:04 and 1:16 marks, but ultimately fell 15-6.

Senior Mae Olshansky (Las Vegas, Nev. / New Trier) tied her career-high in saves with 11 in 60 minutes of action in the loss for Plattsburgh. Olivia Scott made 10 saves in 60 minutes of action in the win for Canton.
