Olshansky Breaks Single-Game Saves Record as Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Potsdam 9-7 in Season Finale

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Graduate student Mae Olshansky (Las Vegas, Nev. / New Trier) made a career-high 18 saves in 60 minutes of action, breaking the previous program record of 16 saves in a game set in 2023 by Lila Nease as the Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team fell to the Potsdam Bears 9-7 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play.

While Olshansky led the way on defense, junior Cynthia Barnosky (Shirley, N.Y. / William Floyd) was the catalyst on offense for the Cardinals with a game-high four goals and also recorded three ground balls. Erica Dickinson (Yaphank, N.Y. / Bellport), Caitlin Nash (Patchogue, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford), and Nicole Resnick (Latham, N.Y. / Shaker) all contributed one goal to the scoring effort. Junior Lexi Carfi (Syracuse, N.Y. / Liverpool) had a career-high four ground balls to go with a career-high two caused turnovers. Taya Balfour (Moorestown, N.J. / Moorestown) and Iohseriio Tabor (Akwesasne, N.Y. / Salmon River) both picked up three draw controls.

For the Bears, Lindsey LaDue led the way with four points off a three-goal and one-assist performance while also picking up three draw controls. Jayla Thompson also tallied three goals on the day while Tessa Pierce had two goals and an assist for three points. Pierce also led the team with seven ground balls, four caused turnovers, and three draw controls.

Potsdam had the edge in shots, 39-30, placing 27 shots on goal while Plattsburgh had 21 shots on goal. The Cardinals went 2-6 on free-position shots, and the Bears were 0-4. The Cardinals won the battle on the circle with 12 draw controls to Potsdam's eight, but the Bears had a 26-21 advantage in ground balls. Plattsburgh finished 19-22 on clears, and the Bears finished 23-28.

Plattsburgh State concludes their season with a 3-12 (1-8 SUNYAC) record, while the Bears conclude their season with a 7-8 (2-7 SUNYAC) record.

After LaDue scored the opening goal of the game at the 10:56 mark, Plattsburgh scored the next two goals, taking a 2-1 lead. Barnosky scored her first goal of the game at the 7:53 mark with an unassisted tally, followed by Resnick as she tacked on a late goal with 35 seconds left in the quarter, and gave Plattsburgh a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Cardinals kept that momentum going into the second quarter as Barnosky scored her second goal of the game a few minutes into the quarter, extending the Cardinals' lead to 3-1. However, back-to-back goals from Potsdam at the 12:33 and 11:50 marks tied the game at two, but another score from Barnosky gave Plattsburgh back the lead momentarily. Nearly a minute later, another goal from LaDue tied the game before a player-up goal from Thompson gave the Bears a 5-4 lead with less than three minutes remaining in the quarter. That lead was also short-lived as a player-up goal from Dickinson tied the game at five before Potsdam notched a goal with just six seconds left in the half and took a 6-5 lead into halftime.

Out of the break, it didn't take long for the Cardinals to find the equalizer as Nash evened up the score at the 11:58 mark. After both teams traded a goal, tying the game at seven, Pierce gave the Bears back the lead with an unassisted score at the 4:34 mark and made the score 8-7 after three quarters of play.

Trailing by one, the fourth quarter saw the Cardinals be shut out on four shots as Thompson tallied an insurance goal at the 7:45 mark, leading to a 9-7 victory for the Bears.

Olshansky took the loss in goal for Plattsburgh while Kimora Swamp made 14 saves in 60 minutes of action in the win for Potsdam.

Wednesday marked the final collegiate game for Maddy Garcia (New Paltz, N.Y. / New Paltz), Rachel LaMar (Ballston Lake, N.Y. / Shenendehowa), Nash, Olshansky, and Resnick.
