Women’s Lacrosse Downs Morrisville 16-5 for First SUNYAC Win of the Season

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -  After scoring five goals in the first half, the Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team exploded for seven goals in the third quarter, leading to a 16-5 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over the Morrisville Mustangs on Saturday at the Field House Complex Turf. Junior Cynthia Barnosky (Shirley, N.Y. / William Floyd) led the charge on offense with seven points off a career-high six goals in a game and an assist.

First-year Ashley O'Hara (Chittenango, N.Y. / The Hill School) had a career-high six points in a game, off a career-high three goals in a game and three assists. Junior Erica Dickinson (Yaphank, N.Y. / Bellport) had a multi-goal outing with two goals and also tallied an assist for three points on the day. Maggie Maurer (Stony Point, N.Y. / North Rockland), Leah Klotz (Highland, N.Y. / Highland), Abby Guasconi (Ogdensburg, N.Y. / Ogdensburg Free Academy), Nicole Resnick (Latham, N.Y. / Shaker), and Chase Calandra (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) all had one goal in the winning effort. Along with their goals, Maurer, Klotz, Guasconi, and Resnick all tallied an assist for two-point performances while Caitlin Nash (Patchogue, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) had an assist as well. Junior Lillian Gilroy (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) led the way defensively with 12 draw controls, four ground balls, and two caused turnovers.

For the Mustangs, Anyssia Ingersol led her team in scoring with four goals while Samantha Budney tacked on a goal as well. Ingersol also led the team in draw controls and caused turnovers with six and four, respectively, while scooping up seven ground balls.

Plattsburgh dominated the shot battle 35-17, placing 26 shots on goal while Morrisville had eight shots on goal. The Cardinals controlled the circle, winning 15 draw controls to the Mustangs' 10, but the Mustangs had the slight edge on ground balls, 25-24. Both teams made two free-position shots as Plattsburgh had nine attempts and Morrisville six. On clears, the Cardinals were 17-19 and the Mustangs were 11-2.

Plattsburgh State rises to 3-7 (1-3 SUNYAC) with the win and is back in action on Tuesday, Apr. 8, when they host Oneonta at 4 p.m. Morrisville falls to 0-6 (0-4 SUNYAC) with the loss and next travel to New Paltz on Wednesday, Apr. 9 at 4 p.m.

The Cardinals got on the board quickly in the first as Barnosky tallied a goal just 30 seconds into the first quarter, with Nash assisting the goal. However, the Mustangs didn't take long to respond as Ingersoll found the back of the net a minute later and tied the game at one at the 13:27 mark. Two minutes later, O'Hara put Plattsburgh back ahead as Barnosky found her for the score, followed by another goal from O'Hara to end the first at the 2:12 mark as Plattsburgh led 3-1 after one quarter of play.

The second quarter was more even as both teams tacked on two more goals, with Ingersoll leading the way for Morrisville with both goals. After Dickinson opened the scoring in the second quarter, Barnosky capped it off with a goal with less than 15 seconds remaining and cushioned the Cardinals' lead to 5-3 at halftime.

It was all Plattsburgh in the third quarter as the Cardinals used a seven-goal quarter to take a commanding 13-3 lead into the final quarter. Barnosky led the way in the Cardinals' seven-goal run with four goals, including a player-down and a player-up goal. The fourth quarter saw the Cardinals tack on four more goals as Calandra, Maurer, and Klotz all scored their first goals of the game en route to Plattsburgh's 16-5 victory.

Graduate student Mae Olshansky (Las Vegas, Nev. / New Trier) made three saves in 60 minutes of action in the win for Plattsburgh. Aniyah Smith made 10 saves in 60 minutes of action in the loss for Morrisville.
