Softball Wraps Up Non-Conference Schedule Dropping a Doubleheader to St. Lawrence

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team took on St. Lawrence on Wednesday afternoon and fell in both ends of the non-conference twin bill, 4-1 and 10-8. The Cardinals took the Saints to extra innings in game one and nearly came back from a six-run deficit in game two, but dropped both games, wrapping up their 2025 non-conference and home schedule.

Sara Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa), Megan Pillus (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Spackenkill), and Meghan Stork (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) each contributed multi-hit games for the Cardinals on the day. Carly Gemmett (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) followed up her perfect game with seven strong innings in game one, allowing just one run as she took a no-decision.

The Cardinals fall to 8-23 and now embark on a huge road trip as they will take on Morrisville and Cortland this weekend, beginning with the Mustangs on Friday, May 2. The Saints move to 19-13 and have an important conference doubleheader on Saturday with RPI.

Game One: St. Lawrence 4, Plattsburgh 1 (8 innings)

The Cardinals and Saints each scored early, and that was all each team would get until extra innings, when St. Lawrence pulled away for the 4-1 win.

Stork was 2-4 and drove in the long Plattsburgh run, while Gemmett made the one run hold up with her seven strong innings, scattering six hits and striking out four, giving up just one run. Gwen Noll (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) was 1-4 with a run scored and a stolen base for Plattsburgh.

For the Saints, Hannah Reardon earned her first career win, allowing just one run over eight innings pitched while striking out three batters. Sofia Camillieri was 2-3 with an RBI triple, while Maeve Thompson and Leah Verschneider each had two hits. Thompson drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, and Allison Kloft had two RBI.

After Gemmett pitched a scoreless first, Noll led off the game with a single and proceeded to steal second. Stork then followed with a single to center, putting Plattsburgh up 1-0.
In the second inning, the Saints tied the game as Verschneider reached on a two-out single and then Camillieri tripled her in.

The score stayed 1-1 until extra innings, as Gemmett and Reardon each quelled the opposing offense.

The game then went into extra innings, and the Cardinals were unable to hold St. Lawrence scoreless, as back-to-back walks, along with the runner placed on second base, loaded the bases to start the frame. After a fielder's choice, Kloft singled in two runs, and Thompson then brought in a run with a sacrifice fly to put St. Lawrence up 4-1.

The Cardinals then went down in order in the eighth, falling to the Saints in extra innings.

Game Two: St. Lawrence 10, Plattsburgh 8

In game two, the bats came alive for both teams, but a five-run third inning for the Saints ultimately was the difference as they won 10-8.

Isaacs finished game two 3-4 with a triple, two RBI, and two runs scored, while Pillus was 2-4 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI. Bella Toleman (Stillwater, N.Y./Stillwater) and Emma Deo (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) each drove in a run for the Cardinals. Cadey Wheat (Edwards, N.Y./Edwards-Knox) threw 4.1 innings of relief, allowing just two runs and striking out one.

For St. Lawrence, Vivian Johnson was 3-4 with two RBI, and Marina Juan was 3-4 with two runs scored and a triple. Thompson was 2-4 with two RBI, and Stella Vangee was 2-3 with a walk, three RBI, and a triple. Izzy Melanson earned the win for the Saints while Sofia Berryhill notched the save with three innings of work.

Thompson singled in a run in the top of the first for an early Saints' lead, but Plattsburgh responded right away as Isaacs singled home Noll in the bottom half of the inning and then came around to score on a wild pitch.

In the second, St. Lawrence tied the game and took the lead as Vangee tripled in a run to tie it, and a run came to score as a runner was caught in a rundown after a walk. The Saints added on in the third as they scored five runs to take a commanding 8-2 lead, as they had five runs on four hits.

The Cards did not go quietly, however, tacking on two runs in the third as a response, as Isaacs tripled with one out and came in to score on a Pillus double. An error then allowed Pillus to score, cutting the St. Lawrence lead to 8-4. The Cards also added a run in the fourth as Isaacs singled home a run to put the Cards down by three runs.

The 8-5 score held until the seventh inning, but a leadoff triple from Juan and a pinch-hit double by Marleigh Monroe stretched the lead to 9-5. Vangee singled to left later in the inning, extending their lead to 10-5.

Plattsburgh State once again would not go down without a fight, as Stork led off the inning with a single, and after a foul out, Pillus singled to left. Toleman then followed with an RBI single, and Deo singled home another run, with an error on the play bringing home Toleman as well to cut the lead to 10-8. With the tying run now at the plate, Berryhill forced a pop out to get two hits and then with Leila Toomey (Commack, N.Y./Commack) at the dish, knocked down a hard-hit line drive that was surely going up the middle for a base hit and retired the sophomore to end the game.
