Softball Celebrates Senior Day with Perfection from Gemmett and a No-Hitter from Ormerod

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team celebrated their Senior Day with a historic day at Cardinal Park, as senior Carly Gemmett (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) tossed a perfect game and junior Morgan Ormerod (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) tossed a no-hitter to sweep the Canton Kangaroos in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader, 14-0 and 8-0.

Plattsburgh recognized its three seniors on Friday at Cardinal Park as Gemmett, Mikayla Manalo (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East), and Sarah Milyko (Goshen, N.Y./Chester Academy) were honored in between games.

Gemmett went five innings, striking out 13 of the 15 batters she faced in game one for the second perfect game in program history. Ormerod went six innings, walking three and striking out eight for the no-hitter in game two as a walk-off run rule gave her the 9th no-hitter in program history.

Plattsburgh State improves to 8-21 (5-9 SUNYAC) and next hosts St. Lawrence for the team's final home games and non-conference finale. Canton falls to 0-23 (0-12 SUNYAC) and is set to play Potsdam on Saturday, April 26 at 3 p.m.

Game One: Plattsburgh 14, Canton 0 (5 innings)

The perfect game was the second in Plattsburgh's history, as Gemmett joins Hall of Famer Jaclyn (Leitze) Weber, who was perfect against Thiel College in 2006.

Gemmett's perfect day was also highlighted by a strong offensive performance, as the Cards scored 14 runs on 11 hits in the 14-0 win. Megan Pillus (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Spackenkill) was 2-2 with a double and three RBIs, and Gwen Noll (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) was 2-3 with three runs scored and three stolen bases.

Ace Rogers took the loss in the circle for Canton, allowing 10 earned runs and 11 hits in four innings.

The Cards wasted little time getting on the board, scoring nine runs on five hits and one error in the first inning. Noll stole home to open the scoring, and Pillus capped the inning with a two-run double to put Plattsburgh up 9-0 after an inning of play.

Gemmett struck out the first six batters she faced before a bunt attempt resulted in an out for the 'Roos to open the third. The senior right-hander then followed with two more strikeouts to finish the third.

In the bottom half of the inning, Plattsburgh added four more runs on four hits to go up 13-0, as Pillus picked up another RBI and Michelle DeFina (Commack, N.Y./Commack) capped the inning with her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly.

Gemmett continued to cruise, striking out two in the fourth, and the Cards followed by adding a run in the bottom of the inning. Meghan Cox (East Norwich, N.Y./Oyster Bay) picked up her first career hit, and first-year Gianna Montes (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) had her first career plate appearance, drawing a bases-loaded walk to earn her first career RBI as well.

In the top of the fifth, Gemmett left no doubt for the bid for perfection, striking out the side to etch her name in the Cardinal record books.

Game Two: Plattsburgh 8, Canton 0 (6 innings)

In game two, the Cardinal pitching was just as excellent as Ormerod no-hit the Kangaroos, becoming the second Plattsburgh pitcher to do so, as Kristina Maggiacomo did the same at Canton back in 2023.

A six-run fifth helped Plattsburgh earn the run-rule walk-off, also clinching Ormerod's no-hitter as they added one more run in the sixth for their eighth run.

In game two, five Cardinals had multi-hit games, with Bella Toleman (Stillwater, N.Y./Stillwater) and DeFina each doing so while also recording a double, a run, and at least one RBI as DeFina drove in two runs. Mikayla Pappas (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) was 2-3 in the win as well, driving in a run and scoring twice.

Bella Betancur, Emily Hobart, and Hailey King each had walks for the 'Roos, and Rylynn Maritn-McInttyre was hit by a pitch, while Rogers took the loss, tossing five innings, allowing seven earned runs and 12 hits.

Plattsburgh got the scoring started in game two in the bottom of the second, as Pappas drove in DeFina with an RBI single to left, giving the team an early 1-0 lead as Ormerod had already worked around three walks to toss up two zeroes in the first two frames.

Both pitchers retired the side in the third, and after Ormerod did the same in the fourth, the Kangaroos were able to work around a leadoff double from Toleman with a double play to end the inning.

Ormerod hit a batter in the sixth but struck out two batters beforehand and then struck out Torie Moore to end the inning. The Cardinals finally picked up the junior right-hander as they tacked on six runs on six hits in the bottom of the fifth, with DeFina capping off the frame with a two-run double to left. With the game-winning run on second, however, Rogers was able to get two outs, ending the inning to guarantee a sixth inning.

In the top of the sixth, Ormerod went 1-2-3, allowing her team to score one run and get the no-hitter for the junior hurler in the home half of the frame.

The Cardinals did just that, as a two-base error set them up nicely to start the inning, and another error followed, putting two runners on and the winning run 60 feet away. Meghan Stork (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) came through for Ormerod, singling in Pappas and ending the game, simultaneously clinching the no-hitter for the junior and the win.
