Softball Drops Non-Conference Doubleheader at Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team traveled to Clarkson University on Tuesday afternoon and dropped two non-conference games, falling 1-0 and 7-3 at Scott Field.

Sara Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa) had hits in both games, while Megan Pillus (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Spackenkill) and Bella Toleman (Stillwater, N.Y./Stillwater) each had two hits in game two. Cadey Wheat (Edwards, N.Y./Edwards-Knox) tossed a complete game in game one, allowing just one run in the loss.

Plattsburgh State falls to 5-14 and next travels to New Paltz on Friday, April 18, for a conference doubleheader. Clarkson moves to 16-11 and next takes on Ithaca on the road on Friday, April 18.

Game One: Clarkson 1, Plattsburgh 0

Despite a great start from Wheat, she was outdueled in game one by Devin Fitzpatrick of Clarkson, who held Plattsburgh State to one hit and no runs in seven innings.

Wheat scattered six hits and one walk while giving up just one earned run and striking out one. Isaacs had the lone hit for Plattsburgh in the loss.

Fitzpatrick allowed just one hit, retiring the first 20 batters of the game before Isaacs singled, and struck out six batters. Zoey Kovach was 2-3 with a double, and Lexi Rydelek was 2-2 with a double and RBI. Elissa Uveino was 1-2 and scored the lone run.

Rydelek doubled in the only run of the game for Clarkson in the first inning, scoring Uveino, and that was all Fitzpatrick would need to give the Golden Knights the win. She retired the first 20 batters she faced before Isaacs singled with two outs in the top of the seventh. She forced a groundout in the next at-bat, settling for a one-hit shutout.

Game Two: Clarkson 7, Plattsburgh 3

After just one hit and no runs in game one, the Cardinal offense responded with nine hits and three runs, but the Golden Knights offense scored six runs in their final two innings to take the 7-3 win.

Pillus and Mikayla Pappas (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) each went 2-3, while Pappas scored a run. Toleman was 2-4 with an RBI and two doubles. Isaacs was 1-3 with a run scored and an RBI sacrifice fly. Carly Gemmett (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) went 5.1 innings and struck out five, while Wheat tossed .2 innings of scoreless relief.

For Clarkson, Kovach had two doubles and drove in two runs, while Emily Bulone was 2-3 with two RBI and a double. Emma Sabourin drove in two runs and had a double, and Elizabeth Greco was 2-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Amanda Corrice earned the win for Clarkson with 1.1 innings of relief, while Fitzpatrick tossed 1.2 scoreless innings to earn the save.

The Golden Knights opened the scoring in the bottom of the first innings, as Kovach doubled home a run.

In the fourth, Plattsburgh finally got their first hit of the game and tied the game with three consecutive hits. Isaacs led the inning off with a single, and Pillus followed with a single. Toleman then doubled down the left field line, easily scoring Isaacs to tie the game at a run apiece.

In the top of the fifth, the Cardinals took the lead as Pappas and Noll started the inning off with singles to put two runners on with no outs. A sacrifice bunt moved them both up a base, and Isaacs followed with a sacrifice fly to score Pappas and advance Noll to third. An errant throw-in also allowed Noll to score, putting Plattsburgh State up 3-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Golden Knights rallied for three runs to retake the lead, capped by Sabourin's two-run, two-out double after an error on a dropped foul ball prolonged the inning.

Clarkson went on to add three more runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth to create a four-run cushion, one that Fitzpatrick was able to protect as she did not give up a hit or walk in 1.2 innings of work.
