Women's Tennis Returns to Action in the Spring, Falling 7-0 to NCAA Division II Saint Michael's

COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team returned to action this Spring at Saint Michael's College, falling 7-0 in Saturday afternoon non-conference action.

The Cardinals fall to 7-5 on the season and next prepare for the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament semifinals, set for Friday, April 25. The Purple Knights improve to 4-11 and take on SUNY Oneonta tomorrow, Sunday, April 13, at the Tarrant Recreation Center.

The three doubles matches saw three wins for Saint Michael',s but the Cardinals held strong, sending the top doubles match to a deciding set. The No. 2 doubles match went to the Purple Knights 6-0, but the Cardinals hung around in the No. 3 doubles match, as Sophia Gottschall (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and Taya Wood (Ellenburgh Depot, N.Y./Saranac) fell 6-3. Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) and Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) nearly got themselves a win in the top doubles match but fell 7-5 to their counterparts.

Singles action began with quick wins for the Saint Michael's squad, but the Cards played tough in several matches, notably at No. 6 singles with Andrea Bingham (Wynantskill, N.Y./Averill Park), who fell 4-6, 2-6, keeping things close with her opponent throughout. Hallie Hurwitz (Beekmantown, N.Y./Beekmantown) hung around in her match as well, falling 1-6, 3-6 in her match at No. 2 singles.
