Women’s Lacrosse Falls in SUNYAC Road Action to Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team fell to Cortland 22-1 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Saturday evening at SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. Senior attacker Maddy Garcia (New Paltz, N.Y. / New Paltz) scored the only goal for Plattsburgh State.

Junior Cynthia Barnosky (Shirley, N.Y. / William Floyd) recorded the assist on the Cardinals' only goal of the game. On the defensive end, junior defender Lillian Gilroy (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) led the way with three ground balls and a caused turnover while picking up three draw controls on the circle. Sophomore Abby Guasconi (Ogdensburg, N.Y. / Ogdensburg Free Academy) had three draw controls and a ground ball, while junior Alex LaDue (Saranac Lake, N.Y. / Saranac Lake) scooped up two ground balls.

For the Red Dragons, Toni Cashman and Nicole Iapoce both tallied six points while Brooke Elizalde led the team in goals with five and Iapoce led the team in assists with three. Rachel Rempe led the charge on the circle with nine draw controls, and Lexi Caron led the way defensively with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Cortland outshot Plattsburgh 35-3 and was dominant on the circle, winning 18 draw controls to Plattsburgh's six. The Red Dragons also had the advantage on the ground, recording 19 ground balls, while the Cardinals had 10. On clears, Plattsburgh was 7-14, and Cortland was 12-14.

Plattsburgh State falls to 2-7 (0-3 SUNYAC) and is back in action next Saturday, Apr. 5, when they host Morrisville at 3 p.m. for their Morgan's Message Game. Cortland moves to 4-4 (2-0 SUNYAC) and next travels to Oneonta on Wednesday, Apr. 2 for a 4 p.m. start time.

Cortland controlled the first quarter, jumping out to a 9-0 lead led by Cashman with three goals and an assist. The Red Dragons had a dominant performance on the circle, winning all 10 draw controls of the quarter and keeping the ball in their attacking zone, limiting the Cardinals' scoring chances.

After Cortland scored the first three goals of the second quarter, the Cardinals finally got on the board. Barnosky was able to find an unguarded cutting Garcia right at the doorstep of the crease, who launched a low shot that got past the Cortland goalie for the score, making the score 12-1 with a little over five minutes to go in the second. However, the Cardinals couldn't keep the momentum going, and Cortland responded with back-to-back goals, including a player-up goal to end the second and took a 14-1 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Cortland did not slow down, outscoring Plattsburgh 4-0 in the third and fourth quarters, capping the game off with a player-down goal from Elizalde at the 1:10 mark as Plattsburgh ultimately fell 22-1.

Sophomore Anna Myers (Saugerties, N.Y. / Saugerties) made five saves in 15 minutes of action, taking the loss for Plattsburgh. Graduate student goalie Mae Olshansky (Las Vegas, Nev. / New Trier) made three saves in 45 minutes of action. Trinity Parks earned the win in goal for Cortland in 45 minutes of action, while Aislynn Cobb came in relief and made one save in 15 minutes of action.
