The first quarter saw even play as both teams combined for eight goals, scoring four each. It was the Gators who got on the board first as Bullock scored the opening goal at the 13:57 mark, but it was followed by back-to-back goals from Plattsburgh. O'Hara tallied the Cardinals' first goal of the game, followed by Barnosky with a player-up goal that made the score 2-1 Cardinals at the 6:44 mark. Crossman tied the game at 2, however, the Cardinals countered with back-to-back goals again from O'Hara and Barnosky and regained the lead 4-2 at the 2:47 mark. The Gators responded with two straight goals to end the first and tied the score at 4 as Walter tacked on a goal with just 16 seconds left in the quarter.

Gilroy opened the scoring in the second, giving Plattsburgh a 5-4 lead, which was the last lead the Cardinals had until the fourth quarter.
