Women’s Lacrosse Drops Close One Against Fredonia in Overtime

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team dropped an overtime game to Fredonia after the Blue Devils scored back-to-back goals sending the game to overtime, eventually winning 13-12 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. Junior attacker Cynthia Barnosky (Shirley, N.Y. / William Floyd) recorded a three-goal hat trick to lead the Cardinal offense as she has tied the program record for points in a career with 106 while junior defender Lillian Gilroy (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) has set a new program record for draw controls in a career with 113 surpassing the previous mark of 111 set by Lindsey Guzzetta.

The Cardinals celebrated four seniors before the action as Maddy Garcia (New Paltz, N.Y. / New Paltz), Rachel LaMar (Ballston Lake, N.Y. / Shenendehowa), Caitlin Nash (Patchogue, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford), and Nicole Resnick (Latham, N.Y. / Shaker) were honored with a pregame ceremony. The senior group was impactful on the offensive end, combining for four of Plattsburgh's 12 goals.

First-year attacker Ashley O'Hara (Chittenango, N.Y. / The Hill School) had three points off two assists and one goal while Garcia also had a multi-point day with two goals. Other goals for Plattsburgh came from Nash, Resnick, Gilroy, Abby Guasconi (Ogdensburg, N.Y. / Ogdensburg Free Academy). Maggie Maurer (Stony Point, N.Y. / North Rockland), and Iohseriio Tabor (Akwesasne, N.Y. / Salmon River).
Defensively, Gilroy and Nash led the way as Gilroy scooped up a career-high seven ground balls to go with four caused turnovers and four draw controls while Nash had a career-high five caused turnovers to pair with three ground balls and two draw controls.

For the Blue Devils, Sydney Buchko led the way with a game-high seven points as she led her team with four goals and three assists. Emma Cockerel finished with five points off three goals and two assists, and Gabby Lewinski had three goals as well. Kiera Young tallied two goals while Cailin Karalus also had a goal.

Plattsburgh dominated shots 31-21 with 19 shots on goal to Fredonia's 13 and had the edge in ground balls 23-17. The Blue Devils just bested the Cardinals on the circle 15-14 while both teams attempted 24 clears with Plattsburgh going 19-24 and Fredonia 22-24. On free-position shots, the Cardinals were 4-9 while the Blue Devils netted three goals on six attempts. The game was riddled with cards, totaling 23 as Plattsburgh and Fredonia both tallied player-up goals with Fredonia also tacking on a player-down goal as well.

Plattsburgh State falls to 1-6 (0-2 SUNYAC) and next travels to Russell Sage on Wednesday, Mar. 26 for their final non-conference game of the season when draw control goes up at 4 p.m. Fredonia moves to 5-3 (1-0 SUNYAC) and next travels to Oswego State on Wednesday, Mar. 26 at 4 p.m.

The first quarter was all Plattsburgh as the Cardinals outscored the Blue Devils 4-1 with four different goal-scorers. It was Resnick who got the scoring started right away one minute into the game as O'Hara squeezed in the pass to the cutting Resnick for the score. Young responded with an unassisted tally at the 10:37 mark to get the Blue Devils on the board, however, the Cardinals countered with three straight goals to end the first coming from Garcia, Nash, and O'Hara and took a 4-1 lead into the second.

Offense was hard to come by in the second quarter as Plattsburgh only scored one goal and Fredonia two as the Blue Devils mounted their comeback. It was Tabor who scored the first goal of the second taking advantage of the free-position shot Before Lewinski tallied back-to-back goals at the 7:34 and 4:25 marks and made the score 5-3 Cardinals which would hold going into halftime.

Plattsburgh's offense woke up again in the third quarter tallying five goals, the most goals of any quarter for the Cardinals. The quarter began with three straight goals from Plattsburgh before Cockerel scored a player-down goal for Fredonia at the 5:16 mark and made the score 8-4, stopping the scoring run for Plattsburgh. The Cardinals finished the third on a 2-1 run capped off by a late tally from Gilroy with five seconds left as she won the draw control and went the distance for the unassisted score that made the score 10-5 Cardinals after three-quarters of play.

The fourth quarter saw the Blue Devils offense dominate, scoring seven goals to the Cardinal's two as they sent the game to overtime. It didn't take long for the comeback to start as Buchko got the scoring started a minute into the game before Garcia tallied her second goal of the game at the 12:58 mark and made the score 11-6 Cardinals. However, ten seconds later C. Karalus responded with a goal off the assist of Buchko, starting a four-goal run to come within one with less than six minutes remaining. Barnoksy had the answer as she made her way through two Fredonia defenders and got a shot past the goalie right on the doorstep, cushioning Plattsburgh's lead to 12-10 at the 5:03 mark. That goal would be the last goal for Plattsburgh as a subsequent card on the Cardinals gave Fredonia a player-up opportunity which the Blue Devils scored on to come within one before Cockerel tallied a goal at the 1:47 mark that tied the game at 12 eventually sending the game to overtime.

It didn't take long for the game to be decided in the extra quarter as Cockerel found Lewinski for the score at the 5:10 mark just 50 seconds into the six-minute overtime period leading to a 13-12 Blue Devils overtime victory.

Graduate student goalie Mae Olshansky (Las Vegas, Nev. / New Trier) made her debut in goal for Plattsburgh, recording five saves in over 60 minutes of action taking the loss. Ashleigh Manns recorded 13 saves in over 60 minutes of action, earning the win for Fredonia.
