Utica controlled the game to start scoring five straight goals midway through the first quarter. The Cardinals ended the run momentarily as Guasconi took advantage of a free-position shot to get Plattsburgh on the board and made the score 5-1 at the 6:56 mark. Utica continued to add to their lead scoring back-to-back goals, however, the Cardinals countered with two goals of their own courtesy of Nash that made the score 7-3 as Barnosky assisted on Nash's first goal to reach 100 career points.
However, that momentum didn't carry into the second quarter as Utica kept the Cardinals off the board until the 11:49 mark when Garcia cashed in on a free-position shot and made the score 9-4 Pioneers. Both teams then exchanged goals coming from the free-position shot before Utica went on a three-goal run and pushed their lead to 13-5. Barnosky netted her second goal in a row for Plattsburgh as she tacked on a late goal with less than 30 seconds to go and made the score 13-6 Pioneers at halftime.
The third quarter saw the Pioneers pull away as they outscored the Cardinals 3-0 and took a 16-6 lead into the fourth quarter. Utica scored the first goal of the fourth quarter, it was Barnosky again as she recorded her third goal of the game at the 9:59 mark for a hat trick. Guasconi followed that up with another free-position goal as the Cardinals continued to cut into Utica's lead and made the score 17-8 at the 7:52 mark but ultimately fell 18-9.
