PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team fell to Clarkson at home 18-4 in non-league action on Wednesday evening at the Field House Complex Turf. Sophomore attacker
Dylan Ruland (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) tallied a goal and assist for two points on the day and has now scored in all four games he has played in.
Other goals came from
Donald Woods (Rocky Point, N.Y. / Rocky Point),
Brayden Shattuck (Queensbury, N.Y. / Queensbury), and
Noah Hilleboe (South Glens Falls, N.Y. / South Glens Falls) who notched his first career goal. Sophomore goalie
Cole Orehosky (Hauppauge, N.Y. / Hauppauge) had a career-high 18 saves in 60 minutes of action in goal for Plattsburgh. Senior face-off specialist
Jab Duval Lapaix (Bronx, N.Y. / Cardinal Hayes) won four faceoffs and scooped up two ground balls. Sophomore defender
Fynn Whitlock (Middlebury, Vt. / Middlebury Union) and graduate student defender
Max Lamitie (Ridge, N.Y. / Longwood) led the way defensively with two caused turnovers while Whitlock recorded four ground balls and Lamitie had one.
For the Golden Knights, Robert Fox led all players with five points off three assists and two goals followed by Connor Matthews with four points off two goals and two assists. Ian Erskine, Joe Kelly, Alex Seiler, and Connor Holly all scored two goals and Sam Mancabelli had two assists and one goal for three points.
Clarkson dominated the shot battle 58-16 and had 36 shots on goal while the Cardinals only had eight shots on goal. Clarkson also controlled the ground game with 53 ground balls compared to Plattsburgh's 25 and won 19 faceoffs to the Cardinals' six. The Cardinals went 1-2 on extra-man opportunities and held the Golden Knights scoreless on their one chance. On clears, the Cardinals were 14-25 while the Golden Knights were 17-19.
Plattsburgh State moves to 2-3 and next travels to Vermont State University (VTSU) Castleton on Saturday, Mar. 15 for a 1 p.m. opening faceoff. Clarkson rises to 4-2 and next travels to Florida on Saturday, Mar. 15 for a matchup with Berry College (Ga.).
The Cardinals only put up three shots in the first quarter while Clarkson had 14 and outscored the Cardinals 5-0, led by Fox with two goals as the Golden Knights took a 5-0 lead into the second quarter.
Plattsburgh's offense woke up in the second quarter as Ruland got the Cardinals on the board first with an unassisted score at the 10:50 mark. However, Clarkson responded with four straight goals that featured four different goal scorers and extended their lead to 10-1 with less than three minutes remaining. Shattuck ended the run with a late goal, receiving the pass from Ruland right off a crease roll cut for the score but the Golden Knights quickly responded as Tristen Dillon recorded a goal just as the quarter ended and made the score 11-2.
The third quarter saw Clarkson outscore Plattsburgh 4-0 and take a 15-2 lead with Seiler tallying two of the four goals while the fourth quarter saw Plattsburgh tack on two goals and Clarkson three. Less than a minute into the fourth quarter a cutting Woods tallied a man-up goal off the pass from
Jamie Gipe (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C. W. Baker), but it was followed by three straight goals from Clarkson as the Golden Knights pushed their lead to 18-3 with a little over five minutes remaining. Plattsburgh responded with a goal a minute later as Hilleboe scored his first career goal after scooping up a ground ball and taking it the distance. The Cardinals held Clarkson scoreless the rest of the way but were not able to cut into the Golden Knight's lead and ultimately fell 18-4.
Griffin Emerson made four saves in 45 minutes of action in the win for Clarkson while Eric Gellasch and Chris Kozloski both had one save in over seven minutes of action.
