PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The No. 8 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team took down Potsdam 3-0 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Friday night matchup. The Cardinals had a goal in each period, leading them to the home win in the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
The Plattsburgh State Cardinals are currently the No. 8 team in the USCHO.com Division III Top-15 Poll.
Su-An Cho (Madison, Ala./Florida Alliance) tallied her second goal of the season and her second multi-point outing of the year, to lead the Cardinal offense.
Tessa Morris (Grand Island, N.Y./Rome Girl's Hockey) added to her team-leading goal tally with her eighth of the season and her first game-winning goal of the year, while
Kate Conlon (New Hudson, Mich./Little Caesars) scored as well in the Plattsburgh win.
Chloe Lewis (Monson, Mass./Northwood School) posted her seventh shutout of the season in a 15-save effort to move to 15-5-1 on the year.
Neither team was able to capitalize on power play opportunities, with the Cardinals going 0-5 and Potsdam going 0-2. Plattsburgh controlled the puck throughout the game, holding it in their offensive zone for extended periods of time as they outshot the Bears 25-15.
Plattsburgh State moves to 15-5-1 (11-3-1 SUNYAC) with the win, while Potsdam falls to 5-11-2 (1-10-2 SUNYAC). The teams will meet tomorrow, Feb. 8 in Potsdam for the team's regular-season finale at 3 p.m.
From the first puck drop, the Cardinals carried a clear advantage, as they were able to generate a lot of shots, eventually putting 25 on net. The Bears did well to get in their way, however, blocking 21 shots on the night to keep the Cards scoring attack at bay.
Plattsburgh broke through the Potsdam defense just over the halfway mark, as Morris tallied a score at the 12:19 mark of action.
Emily Kasprzak (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) started the scoring opportunity by controlling a loose puck along the boards behind the net. The sophomore forward then tried to find
Kayson Ruegge (Edmond, Okla./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) with a centering pass towards the net, but she was unable to control. The now loose puck slid into the slot with no one around, before Morris came in undefended and flipped the puck past the Potsdam goalie for the goal.
The 1-0 lead held into the intermission and through the early part of the second period, despite the Cards being on a 5-3 advantage for over a minute early in the stanza. Conlon gave Plattsburgh the two-goal cushion with a fantastic score late in the second period with less than four minutes to go. After a faceoff win, Cho had her pass deflected from the point over to
Sydnee Francis (Canton, N.Y./Nepean Jr. Wildcats) above the right face-off circle. Francis then passed towards the crease to Conlon, who was waiting, and flipped the puck with her back turned to the goalie through her legs and past the netminder's left blocker for the score. The goal was her fifth of the season and second of the year against the Bears.
The Cardinals continued their strong play into the third period, as Cho put the finishing touches on the win with her second goal of the year. The junior defender nailed a shot from the point, as both
Seoyoung Yoo (Yongin, Republic of Korea/Ontario Hockey Academy) and
Ella Fesette (Plattsburgh, N.Y. /RIT) picked up assists with 3:06 elapsed in the stanza.
Plattsburgh State made the 3-0 lead stand the rest of the way, as Lewis made five saves in the period to keep the shutout and give the Cardinals the win.
Magalie Parent made 22 saves in net for Potsdam as she took the loss.
