No. 8 Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Potsdam 3-1 in Road SUNYAC Contest

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The No. 8 Plattsburgh State Cardinals went on the road Saturday afternoon to Potsdam and defeated the Bears 3-1 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action. The Cardinals earned the season sweep over the Bears, running their winning streak over Potsdam to 42 wins in 42 all-time matchups.

The Plattsburgh State Cardinals are currently the No. 8 team in the USCHO.com Division III Top-15 Poll.

Three Cardinals tallied goals on the evening, with Bridget Orr (Excelsior, Minn./North American Hockey Academy) picking up the game-winner, Tessa Morris (Grand Island, N.Y./Rome Girl's Hockey) opening the game's scoring, and Ciara Wall (Somerville, Mass./New Hampshire) sealing the win for Plattsburgh in the third period. Chloe Lewis (Monson, Mass/Northwood School) earned her 16th win of the season making 12 saves over 60 minutes of action.

Plattsburgh outshot the Bears on the evening 32-13, while going 0-2 on the only two power plays of the day between both teams.

The Cardinals improve to 16-5-1 (12-3-1 SUNYAC) and have officially clinched a spot in the SUNYAC playoffs as they will look to clinch a top two seed in their final games of the season next weekend. Their final conference weekend begins on Friday, Feb. 14 at 3 p.m. against SUNY Canton before the team celebrates their Senior Day the following day against Canton as well. Potsdam falls to 5-12-2 (1-11-2 SUNYAC) and next takes on Cortland on Friday, Feb. 14.

The Cards once again controlled play against the Bears, holding possession of the puck throughout the action. The consistent offensive play resulted in a goal for Plattsburgh just after the 12-and-a-half-minute mark as Morris finished off a Kayson Ruegge (Edmond, Okla./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) centering pass in the slot for the goal. The score gave the first-year her team-leading ninth goal of the year and her second straight game with a goal.

Plattsburgh State continued to churn offensively, getting their second goal of the afternoon with just under two minutes left in the first period, as Orr tallied her third goal of the year on an impressive shot from just in front of the goal line. The score gave the Cards a 2-0 lead heading into the second stanza, as Mae Olshansky (Las Vegas, Nev./North American Hockey Academy) and Molly Riggi (Farmingdale, N.J./New Jersey Titans) each added assists.

In the second period, Potsdam played their best period of the weekend, putting up six shots and notching their lone goal of the game. Jalynn Castro picked up the score of assists from Vicotria Proulx and Sara Barrett, putting the Bears down just one score heading into the final period.

Leading by just a goal heading into the final period of regulation, the Cardinals did not give much opportunity for the Bears to tie the game, holding a 13-4 advantage on shots in the stanza. Wall gave the Cards a big insurance goal, rebounding a saved Sydnee Francis (Canton, N.Y./Nepean Jr. Wildcats) into the back of the net with a shoveled back hand shot past the Potsdam goalie.

With the two-goal lead, Plattsburgh was able to rely on their strong defense and the play of Lewis, cruising through the final 12-plus minutes for the win.

Hannah Barrett made 29 saves in just over 59 minutes of play, taking the loss.
