Women’s Lacrosse Sets Single-Game Record For Goals Scored with 25 in Dominant 25-11 Win Over VTSU-Castleton

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team set a single-game record for goals scored with 25 in their dominant non-conference 25-11 win over Vermont State University (VTSU) Castleton on Wednesday evening. Junior defender Lillian Gilroy (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) also set a single-game record with her career-high 17 draw controls on the circle. Junior attacker Cynthia Barnosky (Shirley, N.Y. / William Floyd) led all players with seven points, tallying five assists and two goals to pair with two ground balls and two draw controls. 
 
The Cardinals had eight total players with multi-point games, with first-year attacker Ashley O'Hara (Chittenango, N.Y. / The Hill School) recording a career-high six points off four assists and two goals as she netted the first goal of her collegiate career. First-year attacker Leah Klotz (Highland, N.Y. / Highland) scored her first collegiate goal in her second game, finishing with a team-high five goals. Senior attacker Maddy Garcia (New Paltz, N.Y. / New Paltz) scored a career-high four goals, while Chase Calandra (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy), Isabella Girard (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Plattsburgh), and Iohseriio Tabor (Akwesasne, N.Y. / Salmon River) all recorded the first goals of their collegiate career. In her second game with Plattsburgh, junior attacker Alex LaDue (Saranac Lake, N.Y. / Saranac Lake) recorded a hat trick alongside senior midfielder Caitlin Nash (Patchogue, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford). 
 
For the Spartans, Phoebe Loomis led her team with five points, recording five goals, while Brianna Paul recorded a hat trick. Remy Cota had a multi-point outing with two goals. 
 
Plattsburgh dominated the shot battle 40-16 and won the ground ball game 26-14. The Cardinals had the advantage on the circle with 28 draw controls to the Spartans' 12 and were 15-18 on clears, while the Spartans were 14-23. The Cardinals were 3-5 on extra player opportunities, while the Spartans were 3-7 and recorded a player-down goal. 
 
Plattsburgh State rises to 1-1 and next hosts Union on Saturday, March 1 for a 1 p.m. opening draw control. VTSU-Castleton falls to 0-1 and next travels to New England College on Saturday, March 1. 
 
After Klotz netted the opening goal, the Spartans scored back-to-back goals and took a short-lived 2-1 lead. It was Klotz again as she responded less than 20 seconds later to tie the game before Rachel LaMar's (Ballston Lake, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) goal at the 11:07 mark gave Plattsburgh the lead for good. The Cardinals scored the next four goals and took a commanding 7-2 lead before Loomis closed the quarter with an extra-player goal and made the score 7-3 after one. 
 
Plattsburgh's lead held as the Cardinals outscored VTSU-Castleton 7-3 again with Tabor opening the scoring at the 12:39 mark in the second quarter and Klotz scoring the final goal of the second quarter, giving the Cardinals a 14-6 lead at halftime. 

The third quarter saw the Spartans outscore the Cardinals 4-3 as LaDue netted two goals in the period. After LaDue's second goal, the Spartans used a three-goal run to cut the Cardinal's lead to 17-10 at the end of the third quarter. 
 
The final quarter was all Plattsburgh as the Cardinals scored the most goals of any of the quarters with eight and only allowed one goal. After the Spartans ended the third on a quick scoring run, the Cardinals went on an 8-0 scoring tear led by Nash with two goals before Loomis scored the final goal of the game as Plattsburgh won 25-11. 

Sophomore Anna Myers (Saugerties, N.Y. / Saugerties) earned her first career win in net, recording four saves in 60 minutes of action, while Katie Stager made nine saves in 60 minutes of action for the Spartans in the loss.
