Despite the Red Dragons out shooting the Cardinals 7-4 in the period, Plattsburgh State looked in control after an early power play saw them go shotless. The team then held Cortland shotless on their first advantage chance, keeping the score at 0 through over 7 minutes of action.
With over 13 minutes elapsed in the period, Urban scored the first Plattsburgh goal of the season against the Red Dragons, sinking a shot from the point off a deflection of a Cortland player. Conlon freed up a puck along the boards before Wall fed the sophomore at the point, leading to the goal and Cardinal lead.
A scoreless second period showed a complete effort from the Plattsburgh team, killing an early Red Dragon penalty and putting two shots on net in the disadvantage. A powerplay just before the midway point of the period did not prove fruitful, but the Cardinal offense gave themselves several chances with 13 shots on goal. A second goal was also wiped off the board, as
Maeghan Forsyth's (Billings, Mont./Notre Dame Hounds) had her shot from the point hit the back of the net, but the referees waived it off for a high stick call.
In the third period, Plattsburgh received a huge goal from Olshansky, as she buried a shot with just over three minutes elapsed in the period. A loose puck at center ice was directed by Conlon towered Wall, who controlled and crossed the blue line into the Plattsburgh offensive zone. Wall then passed off to Olshansky as she approached the slot, as the graduate student faked her way around one defender and then ripped a shot that went bar down for a highlight reel goal. The goal also gave the Cards a nice two-score cushion with just under 17 minutes remaining.
Plattsburgh's defense held strong throughout the final period, killing a penalty at the 12:19 mark as Lewis stopped seven shots to keep her team ahead. In the closing minutes, the Red Dragons finally scored with an extra skater on the ice but were unable to find the equalizing goal as they fell 2-1 to the Cardinals.
Molly Goergen took the loss in net making 25 saves, while Fanny Aneborn scored the lone Cortland goal.
