PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Coming off a split weekend at the LayerEight Shootout, the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team carried its momentum into conference play on Friday night, earning a hard-fought 4–3 overtime win on the road against Fredonia. The Cardinals, who entered the matchup having won seven of their last eight meetings with the Blue Devils, looked to make it two straight victories as they returned to SUNYAC action.
Plattsburgh opened the scoring late in the first period when junior Aaron Cartron (Middletown, Del.) buried a power-play goal, giving the Cardinals a 1–0 lead after twenty minutes. Fredonia responded early in the second, tying the game at 1–1 on a goal from Carson Ricci, but the Cardinals regained the advantage midway through the frame as senior captain Spencer Bellina (Medina, Ohio) found the back of the net, his first goal of the season. The Blue Devils answered once again, capitalizing on a power play of their own, with Keenan McNeill evening the score at 2–2 heading into the final period.
Fredonia grabbed its first lead of the night with just under six minutes remaining in the third when Luke Morris put the hosts ahead 3–2, putting the Cardinals in need of late offense. With the goalie pulled for an extra attacker, Plattsburgh delivered a dramatic response, as first-year Alexandro Moliner (Delson, Quebec) netted the equalizer with just three seconds remaining in regulation, forcing overtime and keeping the Cardinals alive.
In the extra frame, the Cardiac Cards lived up to their nickname. Just 1:06 into overtime, and on a power play, junior Vladislav Pshenichnikov (Moscow, Russia) found the back of the net to cap off the comeback victory. The win marks back-to-back come-from-behind overtime victories for Plattsburgh and their third such overtime comeback of the season, continuing their early reputation for late-game heroics.
Plattsburgh will look to carry its momentum forward as it continues its road trip tomorrow, taking on Buffalo State in another SUNYAC matchup. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m.
