BUFFALO, N.Y. — Riding the momentum of back-to-back come-from-behind overtime wins, the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team extended its streak to three straight victories with a 4–3 road win over Buffalo State on Saturday in SUNYAC play.
The Cardinals wasted little time generating offense. Just over eight minutes into the first period, sophomore Quinn Tavares (Mississauga, Ontario) opened the scoring with his third goal of the season. After Jake Sacratini (Montreal, Quebec) collected the puck behind the net, he fed it to Tavares alongside him. Tavares curled out from below the goal line, stepped to the side of the net, and snapped a shot that found its way through, giving Plattsburgh a 1–0 lead.
The Bengals answered just over two minutes later, but Plattsburgh responded quickly. At 13:36, first-year Alexandro Moliner (Delson, Quebec) skated behind the Buffalo State net and centered a perfect feed to junior Aaron Catron (Middletown, Del.), who buried it in front to put the Cardinals back on top 2–1. The Bengals tied the game late in the period, sending the teams to intermission locked at 2–2.
Plattsburgh regained control early in the second period when first-year Mike English made it 3–2 less than a minute into the period. English's initial shot was turned aside, but he stayed with the play, corralled his own rebound, and stuffed it home for the go-ahead goal. Buffalo State answered again midway through the frame, and the teams remained tied 3–3 through regulation.
For the second night in a row, overtime belonged to Vlad Pshenichnikov (Moscow, Russia). After scoring the dramatic OT winner the night before at Fredonia, the junior forward delivered again, ripping home the deciding goal just 1:21 into overtime to secure the Cardinals' 4–3 victory. Catron picked up the assist, logging his second point of the night. First-year goaltender Beau Lane (Pembroke, Mass.) finished with 24 saves to earn the win.
With the victory, Plattsburgh improves to 6–4–0 overall and 3–3–0 in SUNYAC play, while adding to its historic success against Buffalo State, including four straight wins.
The Cardinals now enter a three-week break before returning home to open the winter portion of their schedule as part of the Comfort Inn Complex Winter Classic on January 2. Plattsburgh will face Wesleyan at 7 p.m.
