Wilson, Walcott Lead Women’s Basketball to 60-56 Comeback Win Over RPI in Season Opener

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Despite trailing by double-digits at the half, the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team flipped the script in the second half, outscoring RPI 39-24 in a 60-56 comeback win in non-conference action on Saturday evening at Memorial Hall. Senior guard Jaden Wilson (Johnstown, N.Y. / Johnstown) and senior forward Imani Walcott (Albany, N.Y. / Albany) sparked the Cardinals' comeback as Wilson led the team in scoring with 20 points and Walcott notched a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Junior guard Julia Greek (Long Island, N.Y. / Ward Melville) had a solid outing as well with 11 points, eight assists, and five rebounds. Kaelyn Morgan (Chateaugay, N.Y. / Chateaugay Central) and Kayla Johannesen (Hyde Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Lourdes) chipped in six and five points, respectively, while Johannesen also grabbed five rebounds. On the defensive end, Walcott was a force in the paint with three blocks, and junior guard Rosie Sculco (Amsterdam, N.Y. / Amsterdam) was a strong presence on the perimeter with two steals to go with three points and a career-high seven rebounds.

For the Engineers, Molly Libby paced the team with 20 points, Callie Flynn led the team in rebounds and blocks with nine and five, and Sydney Blaney led the team in assists with four.

Overall, for the game, Plattsburgh shot a solid 36.5% from the field and 35.3% from behind the arc, compared to the Engineers, who shot 28.8% from the field but were more accurate from the three-point line, shooting 36.7%. The Cardinals dominated points in the paint (30-12) and collected seven points off 19 RPI turnovers, while RPI had 13 points off turnovers. Plattsburgh also controlled second-chance points (14-5), despite RPI having a slight 48-46 edge in rebounds.

Wilson opened the scoring in the first with a three-pointer, and it didn't take long for RPI to respond with a three of their own to tie the score at 3. The game was a close battle until halfway through the quarter, RPI knocked down back-to-back baskets that put them ahead 16-8. A 6-0 run from Plattsburgh to end the first cut into RPI's lead and made the score 16-14 going into the second quarter.

RPI controlled the second quarter, outscoring Plattsburgh 16-7, thanks to an 11-0 run that made the score 29-16. The Cardinals responded with a layup from Wilson and a three-pointer from Greek to end the second quarter and went into halftime down 32-21.

The third quarter was as even as it gets with both teams scoring 16 points as Plattsburgh cut into the RPI lead thanks to back-to-back 4-0 bursts that made the score 34-29 halfway through the quarter. However, RPI extended its lead back to double-digits after a run of its own, and Plattsburgh trailed 48-37 after three quarters of play.

After RPI opened the scoring in the fourth, Plattsburgh went on a 14-0 tear led by Walcott with seven points and took a 51-49 lead, their first of the second half. RPI tied the game at 51, but a Greek layup gave Plattsburgh back the lead and the momentum. Late in the quarter, a 5-0 burst, including clutch baskets from Walcott and Johannesen, put the finishing touches on the Cardinals' 60-56 victory.

With the win, Plattsburgh State starts its 2025-26 campaign 1-0 and is back in action on Friday, Nov. 14, when the team hosts Mount Holyoke at 5:30 p.m. in the opening game of the Cardinal Classic. RPI falls to 1-1 and next hosts Keene State next Saturday, Nov. 15.
