PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Senior forward
Imani Walcott (Albany, N.Y. / Albany) posted her second straight double-double in the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team's dominant 82-42 win over Mount Holyoke on Friday night at Memorial Hall. Walcott finished with a game-high 16 points and 13 rebounds and added three steals.
Junior guard
Lauren LaFountain (Saratoga Springs, N.Y. / Saratoga Springs) was in double figures as well with a career-high 10 points and four rebounds. Junior guard
Rosie Sculco (Amsterdam, N.Y. / Amsterdam) contributed nine points and five rebounds, while sophomore guard
Tori Russo (Schenectady, N.Y. / Shaker) chipped in seven points, one rebound, one assist, and one block. The offense was set up by junior guard
Julia Greek (Long Island, N.Y. / Ward Melville) with a game-high four assists to go with five points, four rebounds, and two steals.
Desiree DuBois (Champlain, N.Y. / Northeastern Clinton Central),
Calleigh Franklin (East Hartland, Conn. / Northwestern Regional), and
Kathy Peterson-Ross (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest) impacted the defensive end with one block each.
Meredith Bush (Gouverneur, N.Y. / Gouverneur),
Samantha Calahan (Highland, N.Y./Highland),
Carmen Marino (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson), and Franklin all recorded the first points of their collegiate careers in the Cardinals' dominant victory.
For the Lyons, Alex Twomey led her team in scoring with 14 points and added six rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Sofia Francisco was also in double figures with 12 points and led her team in rebounds with eight, and recorded a game-high five blocks.
Overall, for the game, Plattsburgh shot a solid 39.1% from the field and 37.0% from behind the arc, knocking down 10 three-pointers. Mount Holyoke only shot 22.0% from the field and 11.8% from the three-point line. The Cardinals dominated the glass, outrebounding Mount Holyoke 58-41 and also bested the Lyons in second chance points (25-9). Both teams recorded double-digit turnovers, while Plattsburgh got 16 points off turnovers and Mount Holyoke got 11.
The Cardinals quickly jumped out to a 10-1 lead after Sculco knocked down a three-pointer at the 7:01 mark. After both teams traded baskets, a Mount Holyoke layup made the score 12-6, Cardinals with 3:54 left in the opening quarter. Plattsburgh responded with back-to-back baskets to extend its lead to 17-6, followed by four more points to take a 21-8 advantage into the second quarter.
Although Mount Holyoke opened the scoring and posted its highest point total in the second quarter, Plattsburgh maintained its momentum, erupting for 25 points behind a 9-0 run capped by a Russo layup to take a 46-22 lead into halftime.
After a layup from Walcott put the first points on the board out of the break, the Lyons went on a quick 6-0 burst and made the score 48-28 Cardinals with 7:21 remaining. The Cardinals answered with five straight points and closed the third quarter on a 6-0 surge, after DuBois knocked down two free throws to extend the lead to 59-32.
The fourth quarter was another high-scoring quarter for the Cardinals, thanks to a 5-0 run that ended with a Russo three-pointer and made the score 80-40, giving the Cardinals their largest lead of the game with 1:13 to go. Marino scored the final basket of the game, knocking down a jumper with under 30 seconds remaining, sealing the Cardinals' 82-42 victory.
With the victory, Plattsburgh State improves to 2-0 to start the season and will next host Utica tomorrow, Nov. 15, at 1 p.m. in the opening game of the final day of the Cardinal Classic. Mount Holyoke falls to 0-3 and will be back in action tomorrow, Nov. 15, against Potsdam in the Cardinal Classic finale.
