NORTHFIELD, Vt. — After falling 5–2 to Middlebury in the opening round, the Cardinals bounced back in the consolation game, outlasting Stevenson 4–3 in overtime.
Plattsburgh took advantage of a chance to regroup and responded with energy. The Mustangs struck first just over six minutes into the first period when Carson Galin found the back of the net to give Stevenson an early 1–0 lead. Just over ten minutes later, Plattsburgh struck back on a power play when first-year Gabriel Filion (Montreal, Quebec), with assists from junior Vladislav Pshenichnikov (Moscow, Russia) and first-year Thierry Lizotte (Saint-François-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud, Quebec), evened the game 1–1. Stevenson regained the edge before the first intermission, when Matt Yeager wired home the go-ahead goal with under one minute remaining in the period.
In the second frame, the Mustangs extended their lead early, with Blake Benson scoring just three minutes in. The Cardinals responded, as first-year Alexandro Moliner (Delson, Quebec) cut the deficit midway through the period before sophomore Quinn Tavares (Mississauga, Ontario) buried a power-play goal with seven seconds remaining to send the game into the final period tied 3–3.
From there, the third period remained scoreless, sending the game to overtime. With under two minutes remaining in the extra frame, senior Colin Callanan (Stony Point, N.Y.) buried the game-winner off a feed from Filion, lifting Plattsburgh to a 4–3 come-from-behind victory. The win marked the Cardinals' second overtime comeback, following last weekend's rally against Cortland. Overall, Plattsburgh outshot Stevenson 32–27, with first-year Beau Lane (Pembroke, Mass.) turning aside 28 of 31 shots.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 4–4, getting back to .500, and will return to SUNYAC action on Friday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. on the road against Fredonia.
