PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team completed a dominant opening weekend of SUNYAC play, earning a 1–0 victory over Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon at Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. The win capped a perfect 2–0 conference start for the Cardinals, who defeated William Smith 4–0 the previous day.
Plattsburgh entered the matchup with a 57-0-1 all-time record against the Bengals and once again controlled the tempo, outshooting Buffalo State 34–12 and keeping the visitors off the scoreboard.
The Cardinals struck first midway through the opening period on a beautifully executed attack. Junior Maeghan Forsyth (Billings, Mont.) chipped a puck up the right-side boards that settled onto the stick of first-year Zoe Puc (West Palm Beach, Fla.), who drew a defender before dropping it behind her for a steaming Kayson Ruegge (Edmond, Okla.). The sophomore accelerated through the slot and ripped a shot into the top-left corner, marking her second goal in as many games and her second straight opening goal to start SUNYAC play.
Despite generating plenty of chances, including five power-play opportunities and a 16-shot third period, Plattsburgh was unable to extend its lead. Buffalo State goaltender Alexa Todd stood tall with a 33-save performance to keep the Bengals within striking distance.
At the other end, junior goaltender Chloe Lewis (Monson, Mass.) continued her flawless weekend, turning aside all 12 shots she faced to record her second shutout in two days. Defensively, the Cardinals locked things down again, holding Buffalo State to single-digit shots each period and going a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill. Plattsburgh also controlled the faceoff dot, winning 62.5 percent of draws behind strong efforts from senior Molly Riggi (Farmingdale, N.J.) (12-of-18) and junior Emily Kasprzak (Niagara, N.Y.) (5-of-7).
With the victory, Plattsburgh improves to 3–1-0 overall and 2–0-0 in SUNYAC play. The Cardinals return to action next Friday, Nov. 21, as they continue conference play on the road at Morrisville.
