Cardinals Fall to Top-Seeded New Paltz in SUNYAC Semifinals

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team concluded its season in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) semifinals, falling to top-seeded New Paltz, 4-0.

The fourth-seeded Cardinals, who advanced to their second consecutive SUNYAC Tournament, drop to 4-5 on the season and finish conference play at 2-3. Plattsburgh State will wrap up its season on Monday with a non-conference matchup against VTSU-Castleton, a team it defeated 6-1 earlier this year to open the season. New Paltz improves to a perfect 7-0 and will face Cortland tomorrow, October 18, in the SUNYAC Championship.

The Hawks got things rolling early, securing the doubles point with a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles and clinching the point with a 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles. The No. 1 doubles match featuring juniors Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) and Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) went unfinished, though the duo managed to take two games before play was halted.

New Paltz went on to earn the 4-0 victory after picking up wins at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 singles to clinch the match. Plattsburgh State battled throughout, with senior Kristy Cantwell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) earning a point in each of her sets at No. 4 singles and first-year Carmen Marino (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) doing the same at No. 5 singles before both of their matches went unfinished.
