Plattsburgh Secures Back-to-Back SUNYAC Victories with Shutout at Canton

CANTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team continued its strong conference play on Saturday, defeating SUNY Canton 2-0 on the road to secure back-to-back SUNYAC victories.

The Cardinals, who entered the match having won all seven previous meetings with the Kangaroos, controlled the game from start to finish. Plattsburgh dictated the pace of play and dominated possession, outshooting Canton 12-2 in the first half and generating numerous scoring opportunities.

Their persistence finally paid off in the closing moments of the opening period. Senior Hannah Meyers (Peru, N.Y./Peru) fired a long-range shot that was tipped off the crossbar, and first-year Alana DeLaCruz (Albany, N.Y./Shaker) was there to head home the rebound for her fifth goal of the season, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

The second half was more of the same for Plattsburgh, which continued to apply relentless pressure and outshot Canton 19-1 in the period. The Cardinals doubled their advantage in the 72nd minute when they capitalized off a Canton goal kick, quickly regaining possession and finding junior Sydney Myers (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Saranac), who buried her team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Goalkeepers Brook Lynn DaSilva (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) and Lily Bailey (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) combined for the shutout, the team's fifth clean sheet of the year as the Cardinals improved to 7-6 overall and 4-1 in SUNYAC play. The win also marks the first time Plattsburgh has been above .500 since their season-opening victory over VTSU-Castleton.

With the result, the Cardinals currently sit atop the SUNYAC standings as they continue their push toward postseason play.
