PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team dropped a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup on Friday night, falling to SUNY Canton 2-0 in the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
Jacob Hearne (Ennismore, Ontario/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) kept the Cardinals in the game throughout the night, making 24 saves in just over 57 minutes of action. Offensively, four different Cardinals had three or more shots as they finished the night with 23, getting outshot by Canton 26-23. Both teams went 0-2 on the power play, but the Kangaroos were able to nab a shorthanded goal in the win.
Plattsburgh State falls to 10-8-1 (4-4 SUNYAC) and next hosts Oswego State on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. SUNY Canton improves to 6-12-1 (3-5 SUNYAC) and next travel to Potsdam to take on the Bears on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.
The first period of action saw a different Kangaroo team than the one Plattsburgh defeated 7-1 in November, as Canton outshot the Cardinals 9-6, playing strong defense and getting some opportunities on offense as well. The Cardinals looked to have a goal off a
Tyler Ramm (Westborough, Mass./Northeast Generals) deflection in front of the net, but a high sticking was called, leaving the score tied at 0 heading into the first intermission.
In the second period, Canton continued to step on the gas, taking the lead with 6:15 elapsed in the stanza, as Reilly McKinnon sunk a shot from the point. Plattsburgh then went on the penalty kill shortly after and killed the penalty despite three shots from the 'Roos. The Cardinals then went on a power play of their own but conceded a short-handed goal just 11 seconds into the advantage giving the Kangaroos a two-goal cushion. In the period, the 'Roos outshot Plattsburgh 13-8
Canton rode the two-goal lead into the third period, and let their defense take precedent the rest of the way. An early power play for the 'Roos was killed, but a few minutes later, they turned around and did the same, keeping Plattsburgh off the board. Down the stretch, Plattsburgh State pulled Hearne off the ice, but the team could not find the back of the net, leading to the 2-0 loss.
Nate Hopkins stopped 23 shots in net to earn the shutout win for the 'Roos.
