Ramm Scores Twice as Men's Ice Hockey Drops Home SUNYAC Contest to Oswego State

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Despite three power play goals, the Plattsburgh State Cardinals fell to rival Oswego State in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup, the 142nd game between the historic rivals. First-year Tyler Ramm (Westborough, Mass./Northeast Generals) posted his second career two-goal game to lead the Cardinal offensive attack.

Ramm tallied the first and third goal of the game for the Cards while fellow first-year Shane Bondy (Sharon, Ontario/Markham Royals) also tallied a score. Junior defenseman Spencer Bellina (Medina, Ohio/Chippewa Steel) picked up his second multi-assist game of the season with two assists in the loss. Jacob Hearne (Ennismore, Ontario/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) was the goalie of record for Plattsburgh, making 18 saves in just under 57 minutes of action.

In a game with 17 penalties, Plattsburgh was able to take advantage, collecting three power play goals on nine tries with over 18 minutes of time on the advantage. Oswego State finished 1-4 on the advantage, with each team putting 23 shots on goal over 60 minutes.

Plattsburgh State falls to 10-9-1 (4-5 SUNYAC) and next travels to Morrisville for a 7 p.m. matchup on Friday, Feb. 7. The Lakers move to 11-6-3 (6-2-1 SUNYAC), sweeping the season series for the second straight year, and next travel to Fredonia on Friday, Feb. 7.

On Stress Ball Night, the Cardinals made the stress balls fly onto the ice early, as the team went on the power play just over two minutes into the action. With almost a minute-and-a-half elapsed on the power play, Ramm deflected a Kevin Weaver-Vitale (Toronto, Ontario/Markham Royals) shot from the point into the back of the net to give Plattsburgh an early lead and bring the over 1,600 in attendance to their feet to toss the red stress balls onto the ice.

A Cardinal penalty kill was directly followed by a power play for the Cards at the 15:32 mark of the period, where the team took nearly the entire advantage before adding to their lead. With just 10 seconds left on the power play and some work around the offensive zone, Jake Sacratini (Montreal, Quebec/AIC) found Patrick Cole (Lancaster, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) on the doorstep unmarked. Cole then passed to Bondy on the opposite side of the net, where Bondy then finished the play with a one-time score on a wide-open goal, extending the Cardinal lead to 2-0 with their second power play score. The goal was Bondy's third of the season, as he now has two this year coming on the power play against Oswego State.

With a 2-0 lead, the Cards went on the power play to begin the second period but were unable to add to their lead. Matt McQuade then got Oswego State  on the board with just over six-and-a-half minutes gone by, cutting the Cardinal lead in half.

Just before the half-way point of the second period, an array of penalties gave Plattsburgh a five on three advantage for nearly four minutes, but the team was unable to score as Oswego State netminder Brandon Milberg made a flurry of saves. A couple of penalties followed on the Cards and the Lakers took advantage as Brandon Cohen tied the game on the power play, with just under six minutes to go in the period.

A 2-2 game heading into the final period of play quickly turned into a Plattsburgh lead as the Cardinals got another power play goal from Ramm, this time off a deflection on a Bellina shot from the point. The lead was short-lived, however, as Daniel Colabufo knotted the game at three goals apiece less than two minutes after. Just over a minute after the game was tied, Cohen notched his second goal, giving Oswego State the lead with just over 14 minutes to go in the game.

The Cards gave themselves several opportunities to tie the game over the next five minutes, but a couple of key saves and blocks kept the Lakers ahead. Just after the halfway mark of the period, a costly turnover just in front of the blue-line sprung a two on one for Oswego, resulting in McQuade's second goal, giving his team an important two-goal cushion.

Plattsburgh State was able to generate shots on net down the stretch, but could not find the back of the net, as a late power play saw five shots get saved by Milberg. An empty net still could not get the Cardinals a goal to get within one score, as the team took the 5-3 loss to Oswego State.

Milberg made 20 saves to earn the win in just under 60 minutes of action, as nine different Lakers picked up assists.
