Hayes' Late Goal Leads to Road Tie for Men's Soccer Against UMass Boston

BOSTON, Mass.John Hayes (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) scored with just over 10 minutes to go in the second half for the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team, earning them a 1-1 tie on the road against UMass Boston. The goal marked Hayes' third of the season, as he has scored in all three of the Cardinal's games so far.

Xavier Kamba (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Nyack) tallied the assist on Hayes' goal, getting his third assist of the season. Teddy Healy (Amityville, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) made four saves in goal, earning his first tie of the season. Hayes led the team with four shots on goal, while Kamba had two, as the Cards won the shot battle 14-7 and outshot the Beacons on goal 8-5. Plattsburgh also earned eight corner kicks to UMass Boston's two, with the Cardinals earning five in the second half.

The Cards move to 2-0-1 on the year and next play Endicott tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 8 at 1 p.m. in Beverly, Massachusetts. The Beacons move to 1-1-1 and next play Wheaton on Sunday, Sept. 8.

UMass Boston was able to take the early lead, as a defensive breakdown left Logan Erickson Potter wide open on the left side of the net for an easy tap-in goal. From there, the Beacons held on tight to the lead, as a physical game saw the Cardinals control for large stretches of action, as evidenced by the shot disparity on the afternoon.

The 1-0 UMass Boston lead held throughout the remainder of the first half and for a large portion of the second half. In the second half, the number of quality chances increased for both teams, but the one-goal lead for the Beacons was intact through the 78th minute.

Finally, at the 78:41 mark of the second half, Lucas Arbelaez (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Somers) got a chance started for Plattsburgh, playing a ball into the box around several Cardinals. After a bounce was left uncontrolled right around the top of the box, Kamba was able to tap a pass to Hayes, who unleashed a low shot that initially looked to have been saved by the Beacons' keeper but trickled past him into the back of the net for the score.

Even after the goal, the Cardinals did not relent, looking to earn an impressive road win as both Hayes and Brian Coughlan (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) had shots on goal saved and three corners down the stretch. The Cards had an outstanding opportunity with Coughlan and Modou Badjie (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) in the waning minutes, but were unable to score there as well, sealing the 1-1 tie.

JJ Devine made seven saves for UMass Boston in goal, earning the first tie for himself this season, while John Arruda picked up the assist on the team's lone goal.
