Women's Tennis Earns Fourth 7-0 Win in Five Matches, Defeating St. Joseph's, Long Island

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team turned in another outstanding performance on Friday evening, putting together their fourth 7-0 win in their last five games, defeating St. Joseph's University, Long Island.

Plattsburgh State improves to 6-2 with the win and takes on Farmingdale State, tomorrow, Sept. 28 at noon. St. Joseph's falls to 1-4 with the loss and next travels to Hunter College for a noon matchup on Sept. 28.

The Cardinals stayed hot to open up doubles action, taking all three matches, led by Megan Phelps (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) and Sophia Gottschall (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) at No. 3 doubles, who earned the first win of the day, 6-3. Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) and Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) followed with a 6-2 win at No.1 doubles, clinching the Cards' first point of the day, as Hallie Hurwitz (Beekmantown, N.Y./Beekmantown) and Kristy Cantwell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) secured the No.2 doubles win, 6-4, for a clean sweep to start the day.

In singles action, Cantwell got the team headed in the right direction with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles, followed closely by Phelps, who also won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Gottschall clinched the team win at No. 4 singles, coming back from a first-set loss to win 2-6, 6-1, 10-5. Carey then secured a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, tailed by Hurwitz who won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Mitchell finished the sweep for Plattsburgh State, winning 7-6 (9-7), 6-1, giving the Cards a 7-0 win.
