CASTLETON, Vt. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team took home their third straight 7-0 win on Friday afternoon, winning convincingly in road non-conference action. The team dropped just one doubles match, winning all of the other eight matches.
The Cardinals move to 5-1 on the season and next play at home against NCAA Division II Saint Michael's on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m. The Spartans fall to 2-4 with the loss and next take on Western Connecticut on Saturday, Sept. 21.
Plattsburgh State began the match well, winning first at No. 2 doubles behind
Hallie Hurwitz (Beekmantown, N.Y./Beekmantown) and
Sophia Gottschall (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) 6-3.
Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) and
Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) took home a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles, securing the doubles decision singular point before taking a 6-4 loss at No. 3 doubles.
Singles action began with wins from Gottschall and
Megan Phelps (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) at No. 4 singles, and No. 5 singles, respectively. Gottschall took home a 6-2, 6-0 win, with Phelps winning 6-0, 6-1. Hurwitz clinched the team win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles, followed by
Andrea Bingham (Wynantskill, N.Y./Averill Park) who won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Carey next won at No. 1 singles 1-6, 7-5, 10-5, before Mitchell finished the win off with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) victory.
